  • The falls weren’t stopped in 1969 just so some scientists could see “what was going on behind the falls”. They were stopped because major errosion had already occured on the American falls, and it was determined that the rock face under the falls needed to be reinforced to prevent further, possibly disasterous, errosion.

  • Actually the falls were caused by a pressure-relief uplift fault that popped up in a huge ring around the entire Great Lakes region. The release of pressure was caused by the gradual melting and removal of the terrific weight of the 1-2 miles thick continental ice sheet. The runoff from the GLs varied considerably because of the formation and natural erosion, as certain temporary river features came and went over the years, as the ice age warmed.

  • I remember going to the falls, when I was a child, when they’d blocked off the flow from the American side. It was interesting to see what the bottom of the river looked like (looked like a solid sheet of rock, limestone or whatever stone it there). I thought it was in the 70’s….but wow time does fly by quickly!!

  • I actually got to see the original ‘Fire Fall’ at Yosemite Park when I was a little boy. At around 9:00 pm they would build a bonfire at the top of Glacier Point and slowly push the burning embers off the high cliff forming an amazing huge glittering fire fall down the face of the cliff. They don’t do that any more for obvious reasons but that was awsome!

  • I remember going to the falls many times in the summer and winter both experiences are amazing in its own way, we went on The Maid Of The Mist getting that close to the falls made you feel like you are part of the scenery. If you haven’t been to Niagara Falls you must put that on your list finding skeletons on the bottom floor of Niagara Falls is disturbing, the skeletons could be from the people trying to get in the book of world records. By going over the falls in a barrel. I don’t want to put a black mark on our beautiful falls but maybe a suicide we don’t know

  • I am so glad the genius scientist along with the local people turned off the falls. They had to remove skeletons and coins which threatened to jam the falls and scare away tourists. After the falls were returned to their former flowing glory a law was passed forbidding the throwing of skeletons or coins into the river. The falls were saved!

  • I recently learned that three people (Burrell Hecock, Eldridge Stanton, and Clara Stanton) went over the falls in February of 1912, when the Niagara Falls ice bridge broke up. There’s actually a plaque about it near Niagara Falls, so I don’t think it would’ve been surprising to find skeletons at the bottom of the falls.

  • My parents & I visited there in 1988 in their Winter season. The whole area was solid with ice and snow. We travelled all the way from Australia to see this beautiful area. We stayed with some friends which they lived in Barrie,Ontario. We were just amazed with the scenery but it was cold but not wet.

  • The layer of rock at the top of the falls is much denser than those beneath. The water going over the falls is carving the less stable rock strata underneath this ledge, thereby loosening this weaker layer and creating the strewn boulders at the base of the falls. This natural ‘carving’ action has been going on since the creation of the Great Lakes and the Niagara gorge when the ice sheet retreated during the last ice age. This action has caused the falls to move upstream until they will eventually cease to exist when they reach Lake Erie.

  • Only visited the falls once. –When I was about 20ish. It was strange /weird though…. When I was a teenager, I suffered 2 severe head injuries and I am now very sound sensitive. (Independence Day fireworks make me shake and cry!) As we got nearer to the roar of the falls, it made my chest and my head begin to tremble. Not long after, the tears began to slowly run down my face! 😲

  • Sorry Yanks. The greatest part of the falls is in Canada. The largest of the three is Horseshoe Falls, also known as Canadian Falls, which straddles the international border between Canada and the United States. The smaller American Falls and Bridal Veil Falls lie entirely within the United States. Get your facts straight. But then, that would be a first.

  • FINDING THE HAND GERNADE AND THE SAFES IS WHAT SURPRISED ME. I LIVE IN EAST TENNESSEE JOHNSON CITY AND THERE’S A LAKE HERE CALLED BOON LAKE THEY HAD TO DRAIN IT A FEW YEARS AGO BECAUSE OF A CRACK IN THE DAM, I HAVE A METAL DETECTOR AND WOULD LOVE TO GO METAL DETECTING AT THE DRY LAKE BED BUT THE GOVERNMENT WON’T LET YOU THEY HAVE SIGNS UP SAYING NO METAL DETECTING, IT’S HARD TELLING WHAT YOU WOULD FIND ON THE BOTTOM OF SOME OF THOSE LAKES THAT HAS BEEN THERE 100, YEARS OR CLOSE TO IT. WHEN I FIRST BOUGHT A NEW METAL DETECTOR 6 YEARS AGO ME AND ONE OF MY COUSINS WENT TO THE SAME LAKE WHEN THEY LET IT DOWN SO FAR IN THE FALL OF THE YEAR ALL WE FOUND WAS LEAD FISHING SINKERS.WHEN I WAS 16 YEARS OLD ME AND SOME FRIENDS FROM MY NEIGHBORHOOD, WALKED TO THIS OLD ROCK QUARRY THAT WAS FILLED WITH WATER IT HAD BEEN HERE ALMOST 100 YEARS, ONE PLACE IN IT NEAR THE SHORE THE WATER IS ABOUT 10 FT DEEP AND YOU CAN SEE THE BOTTOM I LOOKED DOWN IN THERE AND THERE IS A 1964 WHITE CHEVY IMPALA SOMEONE HAD PUSHED FROM THE CLIFF INTO THE WATER THAT WAS IN THE 1970S .

  • So just how much “stone” was removed from the base of the American Falls? Better yet, how was it done and why are there no photos of the equipment which must have been mobilized for such a massive undertaking? (The debris pile was estimated to be approximately 280,000 cubic yards.) Maybe that is because nothing aside from some samples and souvenirs was removed from the base of the American Falls. In actuality, the International Joint Commission which oversees the falls decided that the removal of the rock pile could/would weaken the American falls to the point that the erosion would accelerate. The Corps did some remedial work to attempt a re-shoring of the soft under layers but to no avail. None of this is to say that Horseshoe Falls did not receive a cosmetic facelift in the late 50;s / early 60’s. During that work the actual website was altered and re-contoured to provide the illusion of more water going over the falls than really was. Regardless, all this work will be for naught as the falls, because of the geology of the Niagara Escarpment, will eventually become a series of cascades and then rapids of quick flowing water. Man cannot stop nature.

  • Without question, the Grand Canyon blew me away. I felt that I was in the presence of God. My eyes teared up and I had the chills and goose bumps all over. I was in awe of the Majesty of the Canyon. It was absolutely amazing. I still tear up when I think about that visit back in 2004. The sad part is, I now live in AZ and have yet to go back but plan to in the next year or so.

  • A few bones and some coins and rocks??? You made me watch this for that. I could of told you this information. 🤦🏻‍♀️ The falls are absolutely stunning, my grandparents, her brother and sister and their partners all moved from Scotland to USA before I was born, I went over for 3 mths to see them meeting my Grandma (my grandad had passed) at the Canadian side of the falls to stay their for a week coming and then again leaving and I used to go out really early before all the people had got up, take the elevator down to the bottom shelf and sit for a few hours in the mist coming off the force of the falls which made it seem like it was drizzling all the time. I love the US and Canada 🇨🇦 and hate what’s happening to 🇺🇸🦅America under the current administration, she’s been taken to her knees. It’s so sad to watch. blessings to all American patriots, from across the pond, Scotland. 🙏🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🌺

  • One moment of silence for Facts Verse who’s quality is DETERIORATING badly!!.. And thank you fellow viewers.. I knew that this article will be nonsense and I went through the comments and realized I was right.. I saved wasting few precious minutes of my life and getting infuriated after seeing nothing..

  • I was there with my mom, my sister and her hubby and their son. I think it was about 1968 and I was 7yrs old . I remember seeing the falls, and we went on a guided tour, we wore raincoats, the tour took us through a tunnel under the falls and there was a platform we stood on to see the falls up close. We slept in the car, (dont know why, probably didn’t have $ for hotel.) In the morning my mom was trying to get out of the car. When she opened the door and the locks went click! and we all woke up. She was embarrassed because she tried to be so quiet.

  • Hum, If I remember my Geo classes form Skoo, Canada is in America! OK, next The word “Behind” and “Bottom” mean two very different things, I lernted that from my Skoo-N years! Really, some one can tell that one Gallon of water goes over the the edge? The flow is approximately 272,700,000 gallons per hour, and the claim, that some one can see one gallon flowing over is ludicrous! Then what did they find, are you sitting down? You ready? They found, ready, “Rocks”! And a few coins, and bones, then BS that a female committed suicide after her loved you jumped, all from bones, WHAT CRAP! These guy could not find the Arse-O with there thumb and two hunting dogs!

  • Thar was way more than 2 found tham 2 was just so close together tho I live in that area I live 6 blocks from it I got pics that my grandmother gave me from wan it was frozen over seeing the blizzard of 77 and it was a beautiful sight to see the falls with main street up and running and now it just going down hill

  • This is too funny! What BS! I lived there in 1969 and this “hype” it total BS! I walked around on the American Falls while the water was diverted. The goal was to study the area and see if a determination could be made on how it will erode. There was no plan ever to truck away the rock at the base of the falls.

  • The Lake District, in Cumbria, England, Brecon Beacons in South Wales, Ben Nevis, all parks in the UK, and all the famous sights in London and the UK, including Stonehenge, Wesbury Horse in Wiltshire also, The large bull sculptures in Spain and The Valley of The Fallen where Franco used to be buried. All the famous sights of Paris as well . Dunns River in Jamaica

  • Think the stones where keeping it from under mining we have a dam built at river down the road its a dam but water flows over the top and although the river is 5’6′ deep and 10’in most depest spots under the dam is sead to be over 20’30’from constent water going over the dam and diging down it dose have a lover concreat part right below the fall to hold the dam up but after that the pool is deep i never hit bottom and it can have such under curent that numerous kids died back before smimming was totaly banned at the dam it use to be lots of fun diving into thepool under the dam you could dive from 3 sides 2 high walls on its side of pool about 25′ dive and from top of dam is about 15′ .

  • The disturbing part is imagine you see a waterfall and its 30 ft tall and u jump down because it looks beautiful but there is a huge barrage of rocks nobody will ever see cause if the power of the water… Now take that to nigara falls where people thought breaking record as simple as getting in a barrel and going off the waterfall… Now you can see how many people did not really fathom the seriousness of the situation because they could not see bast the mist or the thick waterlines

  • Around 18,000 years ago, the falls didn’t exist. They were formed then ice sheet from the North Pole left behind vast areas of landscape, what we know today as North America. When the vast chunks of ice started to melt, the fall came into existence. When the glaciers melted, a considerable amount of water was sent into the Niagara River. It took a lot of time for the water to erode the cliffs, and the falls were formed. By the end of the 19the century, the world’s first hydroelectric generating station was built near the falls. Soon, it started producing electricity. Unfortunately, the electricity could only carry 300-feet, so everyone knew that improvements had to be made. Nicola Tesla was the man who made those changes. He found a way to send electricity to long distances bu using alternating current. Today, the fall’s power plants produce more than two million kilowatts of power.\r \r The scientists wanted to see if it was possible to see what was going on behind the falls. They thought that if they could stop them from flowing, they could find out the mysteries behind them. Tempering nature is a challenge, and many people wondered if what the scientists had planned was even possible. How is it possible to stop such a powerful force? \r \r This may sound strange, but the amount of water changes at night. This isn’t something that happens; naturally, it is due to a human factor. Local companies are allowed to take water from the falls, but only at night. During the ’50s, the locals signed a treaty to take more water at night when there weren’t too many tourists there, and they wouldn’t notice a difference.

  • Sewage flows over the falls every May or June. Happens whenever the waste treatment plant on the American side has an “accident”. The same recurring issue for over 20 years on the New York side. I live here so to me it’s nothing new. Hopefully whoever watches this article might want to reconsider a vacation here. And that’s besides high radiation levels due to uranium, plutonium, and radium left over from the Manhattan project buried under neighborhoods in Niagara Falls Ny. Also the love canal has never been been fully exhumed and removed yet. Just been covered up with clay and rubber. On the bright side. Rent is low for Niagara Falls Ny. But is it worth it??????????????

  • Canada maintains the Niagara River and the Falls. … If an American jumped into the Niagara River they’d be jumping into Canada. … It’s estimated two people a month jump over the falls. … Bridle Rock, on the Canadian side is the most popular launching spot and many people leave their shoes behind when they jump.

  • The Smokey mountains. We love it because it has a touchable, warm, and natural atmosphere ! The foliage is gorgeous, and it is situated on the trail that reaches up the whole Eastern Side of the United States. It has so much interesting history from USA. also, so many seasons that have so much beauty!!!!

  • The falls generation plant was already there and they just modified the new one on top of theold one the question is who built the original. Because the narrative is that Europeans discovered America full of forest and wild Indians and that’s it. There’s 100s of such sites all over America that are far more ancient the America itself.

  • I live in Niagara Falls NY the city itself is ghetto, condemned building’s everywhere, crackheads, crime but The Falls itself is beautiful I work a 2-minute bike ride away sometimes I go into the park and I fall asleep there it’s so beautiful waking up right next to Niagara Falls, I once climb the fence to get a close look and picture and I slipped on algae and almost fell in smh

  • Actually by coincidence I saw this article and I was impressed and admired by the entire group interviewed and their anegdotes starting with the two ladies, what a wonderful meeting full of sympathy and humor, grace and joy. I can’t stop perusal this article, every time I watch it I enjoy it completely. What wonderful people.

  • I saw something similar happen at a Silicon Valley cafeteria, where most of the cafeteria employees were from Mexico, and bilingual in Spanish & English. One ran out of $1 bills at her register, and asked a coworker for some “singles”. She got a small stack of $5 bills instead, because the other thought she said “cincos”.

  • The whole thing of Brits taking on different regional accents to do “bits” is absolutely true, and it’s not the same as code-switching (using one of your own dialects to suit the company/situation, like leaning into your own regional dialect at home and using RP at work). It’s also based on cultural attitudes each region has about other regions, so listen closely for that context.

  • A teacher I had was once breaking the ice on the first day of class, going around the classroom and asking students to say their name, major, and favorite hobby. One student said their name, major, and that they “really like cocaine.” There was an awkward silence. She had meant “cooking.” It was a very thick Nigerian accent. 😂

  • A true story. My father (of blessed memory) told me that in the early days of his podiatric practice (50’s) that he once told a new patient before leaving the treatment room and closing the door, to please take off her shoes and hose meaning pantyhose. When my father came back the woman was completely naked! Embarrassingly she thought my father said to take off her shoes and CLOTHES!!!! He told me that the woman lived in the town where we had our practice and every time she would see my father walking down the street she would quickly run to the other side.

  • True story – I’m a barber (that’s how you know it’s true… no self-respecting man would claim to be that if they weren’t)… Anywho… there is a haircut, called a “Caesar”, it’s really short on top with a longer bit in the front that can be styled (usually flipped upward with gel – think Shoney’s Big Boy). One day, a Latina mom, with a very heavy accent, came in to get her son’s haircut (he was about 6 or 7). When I asked her what she wanted, she said, “Short on the sides, and just a Caesar on the top” (except, with the really, really thick accent – think the Housekeeper on Family Guy, yes?… “no, no, no”). As I got started, the mom said she was going to use the restroom; so off she went. A few minutes later, she came out, but wasn’t really paying attention to me, so she went to sit down on the bench – I must say though, as an aside… I love little Latin kids, they’re the absolute best customers, because they sit really still and they never say a word… you can accidentally cut one of them and they won’t make a peep (not that I’m recommending that you should do that or anything – “That’s him officer… That’s the one who tried to recruit me into his cult that goes around cutting up little children! I hope they give you the chair, mister! This is Texas, boy… they gonna make you ride the lightning!” Where was I? Oh, yeah!.. So, I’m pretty far along into this haircut – almost done actually – when the mom finally looks up. She gasps, jumps up, and starts yelling as she runs towards me!

  • My friend is an actor and I keep asking him about how good Anna Kendrick is, because I have a lot of movies to get caught up on, and he says she’s awesome and can really sing. So. This is the first time I’ve seen her speak and whoever decided on the eye shadow make up was really inspired. That looks great. And she’s really good at speaking for fun. So much talent, these days, and how can you get caught up when you’ve missed like 5+ years of movies? I’m thinking of taking out two birds with one stone with ‘A Simple Favor,’ because I’ve never seen Blake Lively in a movie either. It’s too much of a good thing, movies. If you didn’t watch for a number of years, they’ve gotten so much better. The franchises are pooling like multiple films and creating this ‘Endgame’ event. It’s again, too much of a good thing. I didn’t know Kendrick is from Maine.

  • Allan Carr was so funny! When he said to the African lady how funny it was that she was explaining to him the joke…. he said… ‘I know, I told you. ‘ hahahaha! Also, the whole article was actually really funny and Anna kendricks story and the knickers story.. Allan Carr’s comment at the end was the cherry on top!

  • I know exactly what she means, I am Scottish. When I am visiting my village it is “Hoo ir ye daein’? Whit ye bin up tae?”, When I visit West Glasgow, Edinburgh, Wales, n.ireland, England ect … I change my accent to “How do you do? What have you been up to?”. She is totally right, a lot of British people do this when they leave their native region, (unless, you already talk like the q ueen).

  • I feel like what makes this show so much better than american talk shows is when guests go on american talk shows the emphasis is to plug their movie/album/show/whatever, which starts things off awkward. Then they try to chat as a secondary thing. Whereas on this show the plug is typically just a secondary thing done at the very end after they’ve already had fun chatting…. that, plus all the alcohol and cocaine.
