What is an example of a monologue?

A better example of a monologue is Polonius’s speech to his son, Laertes, before Laertes goes to France. He gives Laertes advice for his trip abroad. Yet here, Laertes! You should be sailing! The wind is in your sail, but you’re still waiting. There, I bless you! Remember these few rules and act accordingly. Don’t let your thoughts speak without your permission. Be friendly, but not too familiar. Those friends you have, and those you’ve tested, hold on to them with steel. But don’t get too involved with new friends. Avoid quarrels, but if you’re in one, be prepared to stand your ground. Listen to everyone, but don’t be afraid to speak up. Dress well, but don’t go overboard. Appearances don’t matter as much in France as they do in other countries.Don’t borrow or lend money. It often hurts both parties. And if you borrow, it makes it harder to manage your money. Be true to yourself. Then you can’t be untrue to anyone. Goodbye. I hope this helps you. This speech is important in both content and timing. It shows what Polonius values and what Laertes must do. It is the last time Laertes will see his father alive. Puck, the mischievous fairy from Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, loves to talk about himself. Another fairy calls him Robin Goodfellow, and he agrees and explains in a long speech.

Who is Nora in a marriage story?

Laura Dern Nora Fanshaw. Charlie: We didn’t have a deal. We just discussed it.

Nora Fanshaw: It’s a deal when you want it. And a discussion when Nicole wants it?

Nora Fanshaw: People don’t accept mothers who drink too much wine and yell at their child. I see. I do too. We can accept an imperfect dad. The idea of a good father was only invented 30 years ago. Before that, fathers were expected to be bad. We want them to be different. We accept them. We love them for their flaws, but not mothers. We don’t accept it in either way. Mary, Mother of Jesus, is perfect. She’s a virgin who gives birth, supports her child, and holds his dead body. The dad isn’t there. He didn’t even have sex. God is in heaven. God is the father, but he didn’t show up. You have to be perfect, and Charlie can be a fuck up. You’re held to a higher standard. It’s messed up, but that’s how it is.

What is a good monologue?

1. A good monologue is a two-person scene. Avoid stories about your past. If you’re telling a story, there should be a reason for it today.

2. Look for monologues from plays. Sometimes you can find interesting pieces from independent films, but don’t use film scripts. I’ll never forget watching someone audition with a piece from Scarface. It was funny to see this person play a role Al Pacino is known for. Good sources: 3. Good sources include: 1) 10 Minute Plays 2) One Act Plays 3) Various new plays festivals often publish new works. 4) Festivals, such as the Humana Festival at Actors Theatre of Louisville, always include an anthology of very short plays inspired by a single theme. 5) Don’t rely on monologue books. The pieces may be overdone. But if you find a monologue that speaks to you, order and read the play. You may find additional pieces.

  • Laura Dern’s portrait of Nora really showed how lawyers can be egotistical, hateful and how they don’t see their clients as people, but as victories. At the end of the movie, Nora even tells Nicole how she “won” because she got extra custody with a clause at the end of the divorce. She truly never cared for Charlie or Nicole’s feelings, she just wanted to win.

  • Frankly, Im seeing a lot of fathers and mothers here. But as A CHILD. As A CHILD, after hearing this monologue, I realize how easily Ive let my father off the hook but couldnt do the same for mom. Ever flaw of hers was exemplified, magnified, scrutinized and interpreted to my standard of a “good mother”. Damn right! This monologue here is.

  • This is so damn realistic. To the eyes of everyone my dad always seems like a better and more ideal parent. But it’s my mom who was the one who had jobs both at work and at home taking care of her children while my dad spent most of his free time sleeping and laying around. Still people respect him more over my mom and on a certain level, he actually believe that he took better care of the family than my mom. The man doesn’t even know his own son’s birthday lolol.

  • This scene is perfect. Some of you must’ve seen the street interview in Jimmy Kimmel where they asked dad how well did they know their children. Most of them are so ridiculous to the point they don’t even remember their eyes colour or their birthday. People are making jokes and memes in the comment section, I would be so curious to see how the comment section turn out if it was the mother who forgot such basic things, the comments would be full of people condemning her irresponsibility, but somehow to father, this can all slip away. And people are in awe when a father knows how to change a diaper, take their kids to school, knows how to fold clothes, knows how to tutor their children, but again, no credits are given when its a mother. These kind of normal behaviour of how a responsible parent should act are being overlooked when it comes to father, and people are shocked when a father actually commits to that, isn’t it supposed to be normal? Why does the society normalise such things? It’s something we should truly reflect on

  • She is absolutely right! And not only that. When they’re arguing and he says he wishes she were dead among some other ‘beautiful’ stuff, you can feel how women have always set the path so men can achieve their goals and succeed. While women have to take on every burden and difficult tasks, they just get away with everything because It’s not their mission to accept and/or face certain conflicts and end up acting in a childish way and dodging the issue because they don’t know how to tackle serious issues as they are men and they get frustrated when dealing with serious problems that have to do with responsibilities or emotions.

  • Laura Dern is nothing short of a QUEEN. A well-deserved Oscar win. She is the only person that could have pulled off this monologue this amazingly. One of the best monologues in film history, and one of the best film performances ever. I’m a 18-year-old theater kid and I agreed with this entire thing. (And I personally think Scarlett Johansson should have won the Oscar for this movie). 👑👑🏆

  • At first i thought the text of this scene was just another scene, in another of thousands movies. But looking at it with a calmer mood, i think its brilliantly Epic, Laura dern says in 1min a truth that we all know its a Truth, lets be honest, women are expected to do a million things more than men. When you get into a family house, and the house is a dirty mess, whos the first person you blame in your mind for not maintain the house clean?…

  • Laura was beyong outstanding. It’s like she believes in every word in her heart before even reciting it in front of the camera. She HAD to win the Oscar. She was brilliant in the speech, the body language, the dress, the hair…… She was just breathtakingly awesome. Excellent job Laura. Soooooo proud of all ur work and especially this.

  • The nuances in the dialogue are great. The fact that she says “Judeo-Christian whatever…” makes me think she’s said a version of this speech to a million women. That her heart is not in it, as much as she’s a woman and everything she’s saying is valid. She just wants to coach her client to victory… not into enlightenment or empowerment.

  • I’m surprised people love this scene so much, because to me this was the one scene that threatened to draw me out of the story. They’re supposed to be having a conversation and then out of nowhere this speech comes out that felt more like her talking to the audience than her helping her client prepare. If it wasn’t Laura Dern but someone less talented performing it I don’t think it would have worked at all.

  • Sometimes I feel like this scene it’s way misunderstood on what the theme is. She is a lawyer, and everything she says in this scene it’s with the whole intent of escalating the conflict as much as possible. She doesn’t say it in a way to make her feel understood, but to spark rage and anger. She is not empowering her by adressing the unfairness, she adresses the unfairness in order to manipulate her so she can make more money.

  • People who are agreeing with this should probably consider that she is, like most family lawyers, paid by the hour. She pretends to only do what’s in her client’s best interest by “sticking up for her” but the nature of her job means she wants nothing more than for the separation to be as long and difficult as possible.

  • I’m not saying that there isn’t any real world truth to this monologue… but… it’s important to still remember that Women win the VAST MAJORITY of these cases in divorce court. Especially in California and especially when it comes to child custody rights. And while there are unfair societal standards of behavior that get thrown around in terms of how a “good Woman ought to act”. Lawyers on both sides will use everything they can in order to tear down the opposition, regardless of their sex. And way more often than not… it’s actually Men who pay the higher price (pun intended) and who receive harsher sentences than Women for making various mistakes within society. Laura Dern did great here though! It’s a solid performance to be sure.

  • There’s so much more Nicole could’ve said during the famous argument scene with Charlie, terrific performance but somehow the scripts are not right for me. She is mostly silent and doesn’t know how to defend herself, she takes it all in, just something is not right for me, the proportion maybe? This scene deserves so much more in my opinion. Just take Charlie having an affair as an example, couldn’t imagine what the scenes or public opinion would be like if Nicole was the one that cheated, it’s the truth and it’s sad.

  • Just my personal opinion. I still don’t see how this was Oscar worthy. The writing is what stood out here. Her acting was good, no doubt, but it wasn’t that good. I guess other nominees were not as good as hers? I can see that she was acting, it didn’t feel natural, unless that was the point of her character: An insecure and unhappy woman hiding behind the shell of a cruel and tough lawyer. Then this performance was amazing. Even then…I don’t see how this was an Oscar worthy performance. Edit: still, congrats to her.

  • I was thinking about the never ending pain of womenhood right from when a girl turns 13. Have a baby – lose your body. Don’t make babies – pain. Make babies – pain. Menopause – pain. And to raise a child – that’s another pain! Fathers can be absent for 1 hour in a day and baby won’t notice but mother can’t. Nature has made parenting mother’s job, fathers are welcome to join the ride. Nature is so unfair to woman, it has to be a man. Mother Nature can’t be for real, I’m sure its Father Nature.

  • I feel like this scene showcases the ability for the lawyer to infect people for her own career gain. Even towards the end where she grants scarlet 55% custody against her wishes; it was an act of her own vanity to achieve that rather than actually helping scarlet(becuase it makes little difference to scarlet, only that Laura is spiting a guy she doesn’t even know). The lawyer is literally preditory in nature, even the way she sits on the couch with her, with her shoes off, as if she’s her close friend. This monologue feels like it’s from a religious fanatic who says stuff that seems profound, but is actually inconsequential. The virgin Mary symbolises miracles commanded by God; achieve the impossible, like walking on water. The father of Christ is in the sky, who represents the absent father according to Dern. Well, The holy spirit shows how God is always with us and is the force that binds the universe together; Jesus’s father is above human and is definitely not a manuscript for parenting. And its crazy how so many people have bought into this. Using her chains of logic, I could say: nuclear fusion (atoms unifying) releases more energy than fission(atoms splitting up). That means that science, and the universe, is against divorcees which is, of course, untrue. Disclaimer: I’m not a Christian. The truth is, this is a couple who no longer want to be together, and they need advisors of the law to justly split key aspects of their lives between them. Laura is making this into a personal vendetta to boost her performance.

  • People don’t accept mothers who drink too much wine and yell at their child and call him an asshole. I get it. I do it too. We can accept an imperfect dad. Let’s face it, the idea of a good father was only invented like 30 years ago. Before that, fathers were expected to be silent and absent and unreliable and selfish, and can all say we want them to be different. But on some basic level, we accept them. We love them for their fallibilities but people absolutely don’t accept those same failings in mothers. We don’t accept it structurally and we don’t accept it spiritually. Because the basis of our Judeo-Christian whatever is Mary, Mother of Jesus, and she’s perfect. She’s a virgin who gives birth, unwaveringly supports her child and holds his dead body when he’s gone. And the dad isn’t there. He didn’t even do the fucking. God is in heaven. God is the father and God didn’t show up. So, you have to be perfect, and Charlie can be a fuck up and it doesn’t matter. You will always be held to a different, higher standard. And it’s fucked up, but that’s the way it is.

  • People don’t accept mothers who drink too much wine and yell at their child and call him an asshole. I get it. I do it too. We can accept an imperfect dad. Let’s face it, the idea of a good father was only invented like 30 years ago. • Okay as someone with an abusive mother and mother in law I can’t even watch this. Mothers shouldn’t get a free pass for being shitty just because some men get away with being a bad dad. Women don’t need to always have everything handed to them in court because they can be abusive and everyone just acts like that’s impossible.

  • This seems so inaccurate from a legal standpoint. Sure, society will judge moms more than dads for many of the reasons she stated, but when it comes to family law, you have one of the few situations where women have a clear and ridiculous advantage in modern society. Judges thinks kids should be with their moms because of the same biases that make society more judgmental of individual mothers. They think moms are important and dads are disposable. I’ve seen this happen in my own extended family. The mother, who had a history of mental illness, neglect, and buying cigarettes for the kid since middle school, won over the dad who had since remarried and lived a far more stable life than her. The kid of course wanted to live in the house with no rules and it seriously fucked him up.

  • Great article. But let me talk about something important, I see a lot of young people and less young people making mistakes that I think they shouldn’t be making. I believe that everyone, young or old investing, should have a business plan that will boost their financial return from three figures to six figures. The investment can be your retirement plan or your future plan, whatever you want, but the most important thing is that you have an investment that is worthwhile.

  • The biggest thing wrong with this scene, and frankly, a big f*ck-up in the props department, but Nora would never own anything other than an iPhone. Never would a divorce lawyer in LA be carrying around a Droid. This fact is FURTHER supported by the fact that right behind Nora on her desk is an Apple desk top. If you have a Mac, you would NEVER have a Droid phone. You can have a Windows computer and an iPhone, but if you have a Apple computer you are Apple all the way. Also, how bad this over-rated movie was, a high-profile person would never still have a desk top in 2020 unless she was a graphic artist. Such a cheap movie.

  • Ok first of all if you are taking any lessons from her you are wrong. 1.) Because her client exposes some crucial statement that is important to the case she is now ethically mandated by her profession to divulge this information. 2.) Her personal view does not matter, she may advise her client on what legal action she can take but she can’t preach to her client her own personal view. She is not ethical in any sense of the word. Not even the guys second lawyer was ethical. If she was talking to her friend and not a client she is representing then go right ahead. Ethics rule all. Something this stupid idiotic world has forgotten. Now was it well acted fuck yes. Now if you agree with what she said then fix your fucking society. This couple were horrible people. Good god. What’s sad is they probably exist. Be better or split up. Good god humanity is a piece of shit.

  • Mom of three here just cringing lol like, tell me you’ve never read the Gospel without acting saying it…Mary actually is on record having tried to get Jesus to stop His ministry, believing He had lost his mind. She also didn’t collect the body, although she was present at the crucifixion. Ah, anyways, the apologist in me can’t help it lol That being said, I like her delivery! At first, I was wondering why she wasn’t really looking at Nicole. She was delivering this monologue to empty space, to the wall, for the most part. Then I realized: she’s “on”. She’s performing for a courtroom in her head already. Very cool decision, whether it came from Dern or someone else.

  • It fucks us man too, like i want to be a good father for my son but every miniscule mistake i make can end on her taking my child from me even something as stupid as “You let him get dirty clothes at the park” but the other day i listened that my son fell off and had a concussion and everybody was like “but you need to understand she has so much pressure over her shoulders” let me tell you if that same concussion accident happened to me i would be in court rigth now trying to deffend myself, shit is f**ed up.

  • Mary the mother if Jesus is in no way perfect. She is a sinner like everybody else. She was chosen by God to give birth to Jesus that was conceived while she was a virgin. She is special, but not sinless according to the Bible. She also married Josef, a mortal man, and she had children with him. She did not stay a perpetual virgin. She was a virgin because Jesus had to be born a man like every man does. But His Father is God. Mother’s are not perfect, neither are fathers. Also it is not accepted that fathers treat their children badly or are never there for them. They need to teach their children good values too.

  • Great acting and L.D. looks amazing. Truly. That said, it saddens me that, culturally, our disconnect with the authentic God, Christ (and yes – even to errantly suggest Mary’s perfect) show just how far we’ve stepped away from truth and how truly hopeless that viewpoint is. I’m also grateful that my years of totally berating God weren’t held against me once I finally recognized the truth about Him. Not one bit. Nor any of the rest of us. The cultural anger and/or atheism is the luxury of people who truly haven’t scraped the bottom, held a gun to their head or swallowed the scotch & bottle of pills. NOBODY recognizes God is all they need until God is all they have.

  • I’m saying this in every comment section…Laura Dern is STUNNING, and no it’s NOT (wholly) due to cosmetic surgery. Go look at “The Last Jedi.” She was beautiful with a purple curly bob haircut!😍🙌🏼💯. Not to be rude or mean but she’s older than Nicole Kidman, and her face is a shadow of what it once was; hardly moves. 😱

  • Somehow I don’t think this will ring true with the millions of fathers all over the world who fulfilled their societal role never saw their children again because the system is overwhelming gynocentric. It’s automatically assumed the woman is the best care giver. This is BS. It’s the other way round.

  • Before that fathers were expected to be providers bring home money, look after their family. Fathers were always expected of cheating, leaving being lazy and not good fathers. Before Fathers and mothers had different roles the provider and the carer if the fathers didn’t provide they werent seen as good fathers if the mothers did care for their children they werent seen as good mothers, that’s why women think there’s no such thing as a good father because now women have been working and being mothers, the world changed for the women but no one realised what yhe fathers were doing before so when the mothers became carers and providers no one taught the fathers to become providers and carers so to fix your problem is to teach young boys and girls that a relationship should be a give and tale if one partner wants to be the carer and the other wants to be a provider, fine but if yku both want to be providers you both need to learn how to be carers aswell, women were taught to be carers first and then told they can be providers qnd men were taught to be providers and if they weren’t they were just horrible men. We all like to talk about the injustices of women and there is a lot. Do not get me wrong there is a lot but Men were also put in a bad way too. Idk thats a gay man’s take on the hetero relationship I kind of always knew I had to take on a carer/provider parenting life and I am Equip to do that with my future partner

  • Am i the only one who thought her entire monologue was nonsense? How does this scene have more views than the ending of the movie? The concept of a good father goes back more than 30 years. Women are held to the same standard that men are in terms of parents. If youre a bad dad the kid doesnt just disregard it because hes a man. This i can tell you from personal experience. Not only that. Its much harder for men to have custody of their kid over the mom. Regardless of the situation. Bringing up jesus and mary was nonsense. Of course god showed up. He literally spoke to them and put that baby in mary. But i guess we’ll just disregard that because “strong powerful women”? Im not even religious it just comes across as nonsense and yet all the comments for this article are like “YES queen preach”. Like wtf. The entire time i watched this scene for the first time both me and my gf were like” wtf kind of argument was that? What nonsense.” Only to find out people are actually not only agreeing with her but looking up to her. And calling this performance oscar worthy?? Wtf?? Shes complaining about men? Thats oscar worthy? Compared to everything else in this movie? Ridiculous. I like Laura Dern. She absolutely does great. But in no way does this scene feel oscar worthy to me.

  • With all do respect Ms. Dern, everyone knows Joseph raised Jesus like his own. The idea of a good father WAS NOT INVENTED IN 1990. Marry staid married to Joseph, and Joseph staid married to Marry. In fact, Joseph was more than happy to raise a kid that wasn’t his. Joseph dies right before Jesus became famous. How he died isn’t even mentioned. If anything, in the basis of our Judaeo-Christian-Whatever, being a father means SACRIFICING EVERYTHING FOR NOTHING. Call me cynical, but I can’t help but feel this divorce lawyer with her nipples showing like it’s spring break in Florida isn’t being 100 percent genuine right now.

  • I love Laura Dern. And it’s a fair point she makes in this scene. But that monologue is completely laughable. Do NOT use concepts of Christianity, but Catholicism in particular, if you obviously have a miniscule understanding of the religion. Using Mary of Nazareth and God the father as a story of the “Perfect Mother and absentee Father” is just ridiculous. The devotion to the mother of Jesus gave a heretofore unheard of amount of respect to a human, mortal woman. The God the father used in this pathetic attempt at shock value falls apart under scrutiny if you are even vaguely aware of the history connected to the Virgin Mary, or Co-Redemptrix, as she has been referred to for centuries

  • The brilliance of this character is that it explains how divorces get completely out of hand and escalate once you start involving lawyers. Her true intentions are disguised behind fake smiles and $5.99 tea bags with custom branding. Her sharp instinct sees a woman that can be riled up and make this a prolonged (and profitable) custody battle. Scarlett’s character never wanted any of the damage that ensues. Her real colors are only revealed in the 45/55 comment. It’s just brilliant.

  • She was fantastic in this film, every word she said was dripping with confidence and a hint of intimidation. The best moment is when Ray Liotta says “You can’t just pretend that the theatre was small and insignificant when you want to move the kid to LA and then pretend it was a massive money-maker when you want to take its money” and she just quickly replies: “Yeah, why not?” with an evil smile and no fucks given. It’s amazing!

  • Does she forget that St Joseph did also the work of nurturing Jesus and taking care of him, not to mention the time where we stood up in front of everyone in Nazareth to just take Mary, the virgin Mother who was pregnant with him not being the ‘biological’ father to go and give birth to Jesus? I mean I get she does it for the sake of acting and all of it, but please just come to think of it and you’ll just get a glimpse of the Great Love that God has for humanity giving his own kid to die for our sins and save us, and the great sacrifice that St Joseph made to be next to Mary and Jesus.

  • “You will always be held to a different, higher standard” A deep concern of mine is that there are actually divorce lawyers out there with this level of willful ignorance of how reality truly is. Spare me the mischaracterized, cognitively dissonant ravings about God and Christianity, sweetheart. This acting really was tremendous, though.

  • i honestly think she deserves the nominations shes been getting but to actually win them.. NO!! her performance in this felt like to me she had a couple months free in her schedule so she just hopped on the project for something to do.. just my opinion! I really hope the academy gives it to florence pugh or margot robbie who actually put more into their performance
