The movie wasn’t realistic, but it showed the struggles of a family going through divorce. The film shows the difficulties of ending a marriage, including the challenges for the family and the need to rebuild a new structure. It was hard to watch Charlie and Nicole choose litigation. I think it’s a shame when cases go to court. Most divorce horror stories come from the litigation process. Many could be avoided. I tell my clients that divorce doesn’t have to be this way. There are ways to make divorce less negative. There are ways to get through divorce in a good way. Mediation and collaborative divorce are better ways to navigate the divorce process. They maintain respect and preserve relationships and assets.

From an attorney’s perspective, the movie was realistic in some ways but not in others. In the courthouse, Nicole’s and Charlie’s attorneys look for information to use against each other. That’s realistic of many divorces. In another scene, family law attorney Nora sits on the couch with Nicole at their first consultation. They are close, which is unusual. I didn’t find this realistic. Nora crossed basic professional boundaries.
