Can Marriage Work Without Money?

Marrying for money is not a bad thing, but it is essential to be open and honest about finances. A successful relationship cannot be maintained without money, but on a low income, a monthly budget, clear spending habits, and trust are key factors.

To maintain a relationship without money, start with an honest conversation about money before marriage. Partners should disclose their assets, liabilities, and credit reports to each other before marriage. Financial issues in marriage can lead to divorce, and it is crucial to have trust and love in the marriage.

Add excitement and spontaneity to the routine and work at the relationship. Money has a profound impact on marital harmony, and if one’s money personality interacts with their spouse, money questions can create discord. The goal should be to create financial security for the family, so seek ways to relieve financial stress.

When communicating feelings, put your feelings into words and ask open-ended questions. Your parents must love you too if they allow the marriage to happen. Money is not everything, but if your partner has no future job prospects or inheritance coming in, it will be a large issue in your marriage.

Marrying for money can have important social security benefits, but it is not a bad thing. To overcome frustrations and tension around money in your marriage, be open about what you both want out of life and how you want to spend your money.

  • Sometimes, love isn’t enough. The reason why half of marriages end in divorce is because of money. 🤷🏿‍♀️ I have experienced this as well. I was making more than him and I was going to school while he was a security guard. I graduated and he wasn’t trying to progress forward. We even made plans that he would go to school after I was done and he scrapped that idea after he realized me graduating was a reality. To be honest, if we were trying to get married, have kids, and live comfortably in NYC then his job wasn’t cutting it. Don’t care what DJ Envy said, you cannot live alone in NYC with a salary of $25,000/year. Love doesn’t pay bills, keep a roof over your head, feed you or allow you to take care of kids financially. Let’s not forget about a college fund. Too many people want to be “in love” and broke and can’t even afford to take care of a baby if the woman somehow gets pregnant. As much as I really loved that man, his lack of ambition and lack of preparation for the future made me realize this relationship is not for me. I am not saying I need someone who is rich but we need to at least be financially compatible.

  • It boils down to the delivery. If a person feels nagged to be more or do more, where it’s like being forced on them, they will not want it or do it. It’s okay to want an ambition man, ask him what he aspires to be or do and works towards that goal. You cannot push him to go a way he does not want to go.

  • This is the real and main reason I been singled for about 14 years now with no kids and never no beautiful healthy women to come home to and chill with. If I struggle to provide for myself which I do then until I can step my financial game up which I will soon after I get my GED/HSE diploma. I’ll go to college for software computer engineering and even before that, I’ll work seriously hard to create talents I been working on to be great at it to earn money that way while I’m attending college! we as black men in America can’t expect our women to step there game up if we ain’t step shit up yet.

  • I feel like if you’re too comfortable making little to no money, then we are not compatible! I can’t pay my car note, house note, light bill, water bill, insurance, trash, sally Mae… any of that with love!! Vice versa. I’ll never take money from a man I don’t love. That’s just me! They are both equally important

  • I usually dont do this I feel like if you’re not making as much as your partner you can’t complain about their finances. If you do then find a way to setup a business for your partner and you guys both excel together. So if you want money find it. Love will be there of you have it but both people should pay the bills. Its money for me. Love dissolves amongst people when the Bills aren’t paid.

  • First the problem is that if as a woman you have more diplomas and therefore a higher paid position, you ain’t going to be happy with a minimum wage dude, let’s be honest ! I ain’t paying the bills, the mortgage, the clothes, the food and everything else and treat you like my man. If anything you are a bonified roommate! And if he ain’t got the motivation to work harder when he sees you climbing the ladder of corporate America or France, then he needs to be a housewife and stay his ass home

  • Love first as long as trying and happy. You can work your ass off for lifestyle and never be happy. Can’t always have it all. If he is a good man don’t turn him into a bad one, please. Some just don’t have that drive bad mental past or trauma, low self-esteem. Can be so many things. She can be the breadwinner. It means that much to her.

  • What people have to think about, especially black women is we can’t have it all. You can’t yell black love and mad if a man is not with a black woman, but also only want a black man doing better than you regardless what that level may be. If you are doing well for yourself and someone doing their best along with being happy is thriving, treating you well in all other areas, why would you disrupt that with an expectation you set? Of course you can move on, but understand no one is perfect so you may get more money, but get cheated on. You may get money and not cheated on, but be treated like shit. It’s hard enough to find true love and be on the same level mentally with also throwing income into the mix as a priority. If this man had a rough past mixed with falling victim to the systematic problems black people already face and this security job was a blessing then let that man live and if you have to contribute more, then so be it if the relationship is worth it. Build with him as you grow, don’t be mad you have to pay part of the bill.

  • She complained about having to pay half the bills not all the bills. She complaining about him being happy he’s a security guard. She’s not talking about a man that don’t work and she’s taking care of. These men been taking care of women paying child support and spousal support and never fo you hear man I need this woman to get a job and pay more bills.

  • I appreciate and commend anybody getting to going to work tbh. Seems like nobody wanna work and nobody wants money or wants to build a good life. Gotta start somewhere, i came from below the bottom. I was born in the mud and it took a long time for me to even WANT to get a job. Then it took another long time for me to want more out of life or more money. Everybody grows at diff times. Seems like she just wants him to have more money so he can pay and she can save her money or spend it on her self. If she dont like him she need to move on

  • For the most part, it won’t work. HOWEVER. The beauty of life is that there always exceptions to the rules and there will always be balance. I’m sure there is someone out there or maybe a few ppl that can exist without the need of money HOWEVER again. The majority won’t last because of the way society makes us have these “picket fence” dreams. And that’s the issue, I think more ppl would be content without money if those “dreams” weren’t in the news and make us feel if we don’t have them, we’re less. But we are not. We are more. The ppl who “have less” have more to gain. Most ppl who have everything don’t want to or really need to strive to gain more.

  • In the security company, obviously that takes time, but at least she’d see him trying to pursue that. Especially if y’all wanna have a family and want to own a house etc . Love is important, but being broke can effect that love. Nothings wrong with trying to improve yourself. Like you don’t care enough about your family to try and do better. Charlemagne acting like somebody say you just suppose magically have stacks by tmm.

  • CTG & DJ ENVY seem to be happy with their family and wife Angela Yee beautiful young lady makes her own money is in the business where lots of men are making a lot of money and she’s always around men that makes a lot of money but yet she only has a boyfriend not a husband …that speaks volume people..and also be careful what you wish for you might have a great thing going just not perfect..

  • Financial stability is important, but damn this is borderline absurd. Ambition is a double edged sword – it provides certain advantages in terms of financial freedom, you know, living that good life we all dream about. On the other hand, “ambitious” people tend to have the least amount of flexibility, and at some point ambition turns into negligence of martial responsibilities. We all know the classic “he’s working too much, which is a common cause behind breakups. It’s not like dude is just cashing in welfare checks not doing shit, just playing xbox all day. He is working, and who knows what can happen? Maybe he’ll get job offerings to move up in the world of security. You know what’s REALLY rare? Finding someone with great character. In my experience, if the love is mutual and genuine, people cant help but to meet each other halfway – it’s all about patience

  • I think a lot of people in the comments missed what she said. The number one thing she said was that he’s in his early 40’s and making minimum wage and is content on being broke. Obviously if she was all about the money she would of never got with him in the first place, all she wants from him is to strive for better. In my opinion I think she should leave him, not right away but give it a few months and if he doesn’t change leave his ass.

  • I pick the money over the love. People betray you and tend to unscrupulous. Money is not the root of evil or any of that, it’s a tool for people to use for the betterment of life. I’d tell the woman to pick what she really wants and follow her path that way. I know what I want and I move in life accordingly. Love can be important depending on who you are but we live in an age where too many people cheating, thieving and doing too much.

  • I don’t think it’s really about money. I think that the woman is in a relationship with a man who don’t have the same drive as she. That’s not a negative. They’re just two people at different points in their lives. He’s happy and comfortable with where he is. Some people want to live on the first floor of the apartment building some people want to live on the top floor or in the middle.

  • Man this whole conversation was exhausting lol. Even if you don’t agree with the woman I think the point is the couple probably don’t share the same values -whether it’s making money and or being ambitious. Both points are valid but if it’s a problem for one party then they should probably not be together.

  • Dj Envy is all over the place with his opinion. You can want better for yourself without it being all about the money. He says he would push his kids to do better in school, but would be content if they graduated by the skin of their teeth? The dude on the phone says “average” and average is passing, but no one wants to be with someone who “just” meets the qualifications to be with that person. Another cause of divorce is a stale marriage. Just do they best you can for your other, or find someone else who wants to be stagnant too.

  • I agree with yee. No ambition is a problem. Love and money go hand in hand. Looki at the bigger picture we want to live comfortable and have stability. Also if you have children you want to be able to give them the best life and own something to pass on to them. Hes 40 and has been lazy and stagnant all his life apparantly

  • This era has the most single women then previous eras. Divorce at a all time high and people getting married at a all time low. The average relationship today only last a year. When compared to other First World countries, America is dead last when it comes to relationships. Now ask yourselves, why is that? Look no further than this comment section and that should give you the answer

  • The original purpose of marriage was actually to grow wealth between families. Love had nothing to do with it. Over the centuries love became a factor because it’s the logical question. 50% of marriages in America end on divorce. However, arranged marriages have a higher success rate statistically. It is worth noting though that I prefer love over finance even though finance is a major element in building a descent and comfortable life. The two should be interlocked.

  • What kind of question is that? Love and Marriage can barely survive WITH money. Isn’t there more stories of rich people splitting up than poor or average folk? It’s like the people with less money tend to stick together because they are worse off apart. Put the people who have money have more options and just drop someone without giving it much thought.
