Shamima Begum, a British-born woman who left the UK to join ISIS at 15, has lost her appeal against the decision to revoke her British citizenship. The Supreme Court has ruled that Begum will not be allowed to return to the UK in order to fight her citizenship case. She made international headlines as an “ISIS bride” in 2019 after pleading with the U.K. government to allow her to return to give birth to her son.
Begum, who left her east London home for Syria with two school friends in 2015, married a fighter with the IS jihadist group and had three children, none of whom survived. In 2019, Begum had argued she was left de facto stateless when Britain’s then interior minister Sajid Javid left her de facto stateless.
The Trump Administration remains firm on its opinion that ISIS bride Hoda Muthana is not a US citizen. In an appearance on Face the Nation Sunday, White House national security adviser John Yong Kim said that Begum’s appeal against the removal of her British citizenship is imminent.
The debate surrounding the fate of ISIS brides continues to fuel, with lawyers for a so-called ISIS bride, Hoda Muthana, suing the Trump administration. A federal judge has ruled that Hoda Muthana, an American-born woman who moved to Syria to join the Islamic State militant group, is not a US citizen.

Fionnuala Ní Aoláin, the UN’s special rapporteur on counter-terrorism and human rights, says it will take 20 years to close the camps in north-east Syria. But Katherine Cornett, head of Reprieve’s unlawful detentions program, said: Security experts and Kurdish authorities say the status quo won’t last. These detention facilities will collapse. The security situation in the region is very unstable. If this continues, these people could be transferred to another country, disappear, or die. “These British families are in a dangerous situation.”

Shamima Begum, who is now 24, was 15 when she and two other girls fled from London in February 2015 to marry IS fighters in Syria at a time when the group’s online recruitment program lured many impressionable young people to its self-proclaimed caliphate. Begum married a Dutch man fighting for IS and had three children, who all died.
Authorities withdrew her British citizenship soon after she surfaced in a Syrian refugee camp in 2019, where she has been ever since. Last year, Begum lost her appeal against the decision at the Special Immigration Appeals Commission, a tribunal which hears challenges to decisions to remove British citizenship on national security grounds.

McCullough was her special advocate, a lawyer who represents a client in a secret case.
Is A Ticket to Syria Based on a true story?

Is it possible to lose British citizenship?
The Home Secretary can take away someone’s British citizenship if it’s in the public interest or if they got it by lying. The British Nationality Act 1981, section 40, allows the Home Secretary to take away someone’s citizenship.
Depriving someone of their citizenship is done for national security or fraud. Depriving someone of their British citizenship for the public good is almost always used for national security. The aim is to stop a person who could harm the UK from coming back. People who have naturalized as British can be deprived of their citizenship even if it makes them stateless. A person born in Britain cannot be stripped of their citizenship.

As an aside, this Government now hands out over 20,000 UK Citizenships EVERY year to Foreigners. I suspect that for every Luba (the Russian dancer off Strictly, who’s lived and worked here for 13 years) there are 1,000 Muslims who moved here 10 years ago and run the local shop, but otherwise don’t like this country and are cheering on the Hate marches ! I’d like to see a halt to any more Citizenships for the next 5 years…..the opposite will happen under Labour, of course.
She’ll be allowed back in. She will be allowed to join the police if she wants to (or even the armed forces), one day even possibly ending up as Commissioner of the Met Police. There is no doubt she will be accepted as a Labour MP if she wants to become one. It would not surprise me if she even rose to a senior position in the anti terrorist squad or intelligence units. The way this country is going, nothing would surprise me anymore. I am beyond beyond shocked.
Imagine if loyal British people like our armed forces, NHS, Police, Fire services and general population whom are struggling got this much attention and effort put into them?. Why are we still entertaining this? are we incapable of making a decision and standing by it?. And you wonder why people like Kim and Putin don’t take a word of what we say seriously.
Shoaib Khan wants to vouch for her returning. Fine if she does, she is his responsibility. He can feed, cloth her etc and never receive another penny from the state for her upkeep. And if she or her ilk put a toe across the line he should face severe consequences and be punished alongside her. Very easy to demonstrate his virtue, but he knows he risks nothing by doing it.
She wants to come back to join the Palestinians marching. She went to marry she can take up the husband’s nationality. Is that not how people who marry British get their status by their spouse? Saying she was a child is nonesense, a child would listen to their parents rules and not run away to get married,
According to extremist cleric Imad Al Moubayed who left Saudi Arabia for the UK 11 months ago under claimed persecution by Crown Prince MBS who is moving that nation toward moderation and closer ties with Israel and the West, ” UK is a safe country ” . How the UK has become a safe haven for Islamic extremism is beyond me, but the opportunity is there for this woman to return an join the community of hate preachers already thriving here .
Very simple, parents teach you’re children appreciation for what they have and what’s at risk if you act the fool. She and all other that go to join terrorist should rot in purgatory for eternity. She committed crimes in another country, she needs to face justice in Syria first, before any discussion of citizenship comes into play.
Why is this still being talked about? I saw her interview she tried the “I was young and didn’t know what I was doing” tactic when her interviewer called her out on that BS she switched and went straight to hiding behind her kids her citizenship should of been revoked years ago she stood up to counted with the enemy she needs to lie in the bed she made
so she said that to him to put his mind at rest..the situation.YET he is saying she is evil ??? i dont like what she has done ..but leaving a young lady; in a camp with all the ISIS brides still loyal to the organization will effect her attitude as for the loss of the children..did he not realise she was on about that time in the iss and the situation she was in then. talk about twisting everything in a interview to make things more sinister ??? i dont believe she should be allowed back ..but please dont try to make storys up
Quran (16:106) – Establishes that there are circumstances that can “compel” a Muslim to tell a lie. It’s called Muda’rat in Sunni and Taqiyya in Shia it is the act of deliberate deceit to advance Islam! See: Quran ( 3:28) also Quran (9:3) Quran (66:2) Quran (40:28) Quran (2:225) Quran ( 5:89) Quran (3:54) etc, etc….
This is actually very simple. She was a child at the time she left (and the whole point of being a child is to make mistakes and learn from them) so she shojld be given leniency, however, if she commits a crime after returning she should be punished with the full extent of the law and with her past taken into account.
Don’t get too excited the establishment could say that to the plebs but in reality let her stay in the UK. With her change of identity costing millions over her lifetime Her extended family that came from Bangladesh and we’ve kept them all on benefits. Her father went back to Bangladesh and is sent all his benefits housing tax, Pips, etc are we mad? Shamima Begun was not born here so she should go back to Bangladesh but they don’t want to have her. She isn’t stateless we did not do that she gave up her citizenship. Peace out ☮️
No way should she be allowed back ! No no never never not ! She could be a danger to us ? The fact that she went unafraid to the awful place joined in,became one of them ! how scary is that 🤬. had kids ( sex) ! She is not a youngster never was,she knew what she was doing, very cunning ! 🤔. I at 15 would have afraid to go to the seaside without my Dad 😢 no no buyer beware ! Victoria 👋
In Bangladesh there was not as much a single protest or much media activity when they revoked her citizenship. Yet in the UK there has been almost a decade of a media circus around this girl. Maybe it is harsh, but life is harsh, and if you chose to go fight or support a terrorist organisation that’s what happens. What kind of emboldening message does it send to domestic terror threats and international hostile actors if we allow her to come back to the UK… We cannot continue to let the UK be seen as that naïve old grandparent to be taken advantage of. She is alive and safe and will continue to be and thats more than the tens of thousands of victims of ISIS can say. How about the same energy used to defend her is used to try help the ever growing homelessness problem here in the UK.
Shamima Begum had Bangladesh citizenship until it was removed on her 21st birthday by the Bangladesh government. This is not an issue for the British government to consider, they did not strip her of this nor can they reinstate this. Her claims of being stateless are not the responsibility of the British government.
She wasn’t trafficked, she made her own choice and now has to learn to live with it. She’s unbothered by the death she witnessed there, and her husband will be out of prison in the next year or so. If they’re allowed to return to the UK, it will be a highly dangerous situation. Neither one of them are sorry for what they did and stand by it. Her father is remarried and lives in Bangladesh now, she can go stay with him. I find it funny now she’s doing her interviews in western clothing instead of her Muslim garb. Did she really believe that the courts would buy that? Pretty sure she doesnt prance around her camp wearing these clothes. She would be punished for it by the other women.
In my own humble opinion, her mitigating factors should have been that she was not fully adult. However, she was in a comfortable position eg: living and studying in Britain. She decided to stop that level of comfort, renouncing it, and the freedom that she was naturally recognised to her at birth, to serve a different cause
She was old enough to know better than to join a terrorist group when she did it anyway. Justice has been served and I really can’t show her any empathy. How many people were attacked, suffered, or were brutally killed because of her actions. Perhaps she was not involved in the fighting, but she likely joined that terror organization to support it. When an organization get’s support, it encourages them to do more of what they have been doing.
If she was allowed back she will come back and claim disability benefits claiming (shes under threat) for the rest of her life and nobody will give her a job, she’ll be given council housing (ahead of people on the waiting list) and possibly a new identity costing around £1’000’000 and all us tax payers will have to fund it. I dont wana pay for her and neither should you. Stop being naive. She knows what she was doing then and she knows what shes doing now trying to tug on peoples heart strings.
There is not much of a UK left for her to return to. A struggling economy, an alienated, dismissed and subjugated population. Our country is infiltrated, gentrified and poorly governed. Our UK is now an overridden, politically confused, ridiculously woke and crime infested country at the mercy of foreign interests, foreign cultural and religious dysfunction, protests and violence, international liabilities and crippled by political correctness. There is no infastructure to halt or pevent illegal entry into this country by boat, however, the political and legal system is willing to fund, promote and broadcast this case at great cost using immense resource.
Let this American remind the UK citizens of this: Shamima Begum burned her own passport, along with her 2 UK friends, in a burning ceremony. As far as I am concerned, Shamima Begum stripped her own self of her UK citizenship. The right decision has come down. Let her stay in Syria and make her own way.
I am not Pradesh…. Please don’t consider this person going into your country…. just don’t…. 15 years 16 years… It does not matter…. if a person is that strong to make a decision to travel halfway around the world to get married at three children… she’s not a kid… nobody is kid if they made those decision….. I have no rights but it’s stupid to consider as an option
She’s of sane mind and body, yes she was a child at the time of being influenced but still. Inviting her back into the country will do nothing but potentially put innocent civilians at risk or more likely it’ll just be another drain of taxpayers money. Let’s face it, does she think the general public would be happy to know she lives next door? I’d see them have to completely new identity and all the bells and whistles that go along with that, can’t imagine that’s gonna be cheap.
At the beginning of her being on tv with her new baby, she had absolutely no regrets about what she did/had done. The journalist who was interviewing her over many months, realised she was manipulating him. I fully agree that she should not come back to the uk and also her life would be hellish if she did.
On blast to anyone with citizenship anywhere. Read the room before for your fly your a$$ into a war conflict then change your mind after decades of carnage. However, the UK should reveal the information to the public. They’re probably trying to protect her from the possibility of a human rights or war crimes tribunal. At this point, set the information free, and call it a day.
When will this girl get the message that GB doesn’t want her back? She’s of sound mind! Of an age that can determine right/wrong! With an understanding of what was morally right/wrong! A clever girl who CHOSE to give up her life in GB for a life in 🎉a renowned war zone 🤷♀️ Wouldn’t trust her as far as I could throw her!!!
Im Irish living in Ireland, and even I dont want her back in England. She made her own choices. We know she was no saint, she was also unbothered about her 3 childrens deaths!!!!!!!. She said this herself, she doesn’t feel sad anymore and has moved on….. Anybody like that is a monster. Who could just ‘move on’, over 3 of their children dying. She watched them die, all 3, and says she doesn’t feel anything about it. Yeah, thats not a normal human being!. I pity her children, may they rest in peace.
This “prosecute her in Brittan” argument completely misses the point. The Brittish government does not proscute war crimes committed by non-Brittish citizens against individuals who are not commonwealth citizens. The point is that her actions worked to effectively renounce is citizenship no longer a citizen for that of hostile regime. That’s the issue- game over.
While I believe she made her own decisions to go to Syria I also believe her legal team has the right to see the evidence the government has showing she is a threat to the safety of Britain. It does not make sense to have a case in court where the courts say, “well, we know you are not good for us, we have proof, but we are not going to show it to you. Trust us.”
Stripping of citizenship isn’t something we use lightly and for sure should still be a thing to remain. Unfortunately for her, she chose to her side and it’s too late for regret now. We are a soft nation and after some fears i am proud to see we have boundaries, At the end of the day she crossed them.
She was a dual citizen of Bangladesh and they rejected her request to return as well. They will not allow her in. Why should the uk? She doesn’t seem the least bit a victim. She’s defiant and condescending. I don’t buy the victim narrative at all. She can stay wherever she is. These people are foolishly believing her gaslighting. They made the right decision. They decided by the laws not by emotion or personal or political opinion.
She might be accountable for her actions which is why she should be prosecuted by her government. I don’t think anyone is questioning whether she should be charged with a crime. Whether she should lose her citizenship over this is a decision that won’t impact her individual case but it’s something that will be used in other cases down the line. And the shade about them being more than capable of handling these kinds of treats was great. Why are they treating this as if it was the worst thing they’ve ever dealt with?
If She is brought back to UK then all the criminals around the world in foreign jail must be brought back to UK. She committed crime in Syria and must face the justice of that country like all the British citizens who have committed crime in foreign country who are facing that country’s justice. It’s simple as this. Face justice of that country if you commit crime in whichever country. It’s wrong to say she is British. I think this should not be the case of nationality.
In addition to all the comments people have left below, no politicians or judges in their right (or political) minds will ever allow her to gain her citizenship back and risk ruining their careers and reputations. Her family and she can keep trying but unfortunately I don’t see any hope of succeeding.
The same excuse they are using for her return, is going to be the same excuse they use to keep her out of prison if they allow her back. I wonder if those that felt so strongly would be willing for her to move next door to them and their families. If she comes back and is still a believer of what she learnt .. what then?
LOL! Glad to hear you Brits did the right thing, she made her choice and she lost. I remember an interview with her saying that her first apartment/house was a room that had been used as a torture chamber and that dried blood was on the walls when they moved in, she also said it was normal to see baskets of heads along the road and that it didn’t bother her, she’d make a great babysitter though I imagine.
Washington spends most of the money allocated as aid for Ukraine on weapons production at home, Acting US Deputy Secretary of State Victoria Nuland said in an interview with CNN this week. Commenting on the pending aid package which Congress failed to approve before going on winter recess, Nuland said she has “strong confidence” that it will pass, as it addresses America’s own interests.
Everyone is a victim, except who believes in law and society. Can cannibals claim victim-hood for their urge to eat other humans. By BBC’s logic yes cannibals are victim of their urge, hence each of the law bidding citizen should voluntarily give our pound of flesh to them. Donating your flesh is The Justice.
Feel a bit sorry for her – she was 15 BUT she has done some heinous things and shown no remorse and would be feted by other terrorists if she was allowed to return…..if her citizenship has been stripped due to information held by MI5 and MI6 then there is probably good reason and this latest appeal should be final……
