Do Democrats Support Isis Bride?

Shamima Begum, a former East End schoolgirl who left the UK at 15, joined ISIS with two teenage friends. By 2015, over 550 young women left their homes in Western nations to join ISIS, becoming wives to the group. The Canadian government has foiled Begum’s wish to return there by revoking her citizenship. Women recruited by the Islamic State, known as “jihadi brides,” often think they will be helping with front-line duties but are being used to solve problems.

The Democratic Party is generally associated with more progressive policies, supporting social and economic equality, favoring greater government intervention in the economy but opposing government involvement in private noneconomic affairs of citizens. Democrats advocate for the civil rights of minorities and support a safety net. They are dedicated to ensuring a stronger and more just future for every American.

The civil war in Syria is not over yet, but stories of people who once left their homes to join ISIS as foreign fighters and jihadi brides continue to be shared. Comparable majorities of Republicans (66%) and Democrats (65%) support the U.S. military campaign against ISIS. Democrats will sustain the global effort to defeat ISIS, al-Qaeda, and their affiliates.

In 2020, hundreds of text messages were received from ISIS women living in Syria, and one woman, Isis Johnson, was sentenced to death.
