What is someone who doesn’t like anyone?
Misanthrope: a person who hates or distrusts people. The essence of a misanthrope is that people who hate will hate. The word “misanthrope” comes from Greek and means “hating humankind.” It was used more often after French playwright Molière’s 1666 comedy about a person who hates society and chooses exile. Misanthrope is related to misanthropy, which means hatred or distrust of humankind. Philanthropy, which means loving humankind, is the opposite. Some people are also philanthropists. Misanthrope comes from the Greek word for “hating humankind.” It was probably popularized by Molière’s play The Misanthrope, which shows a person who hates society and chooses to live alone. In English, misanthrope (or its anglicized equivalent, misanthropist) has been used to describe many people who seem antisocial, from satirist Jonathan Swift to philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche to Charles Dickens’s character Ebenezer Scrooge. It is one of several words in English that start with “mis-” (from Greek “misein,” meaning “hate”). These words name people who hate something or someone. The most common example today is misogynist, used for a person who hates women. Two other words for people who hate men and children are misandrist and misopedist. Many movie-goers today are misanthropic. They reject the idea of intelligent design. —James Morris, Wilson Quarterly, Autumn 2005 It’s not healthy for a man who is already a hermit or part-time misanthrope. —Edmund White, Vanity Fair, September 1996 She is a pure misanthrope who doesn’t understand why solitary confinement is considered punishment. —Lewis Burke Frumkes, New York Times Book Review, 10 May 1992 The young people thought him a gloomy misanthrope because he never joined in their sports. The old men thought him even more of a misanthrope because he followed no trade. —Washington Irving, Salmagundi, November 24, 1807, in History, Tales, and Sketches, 1977.

Gift ideas for someone who doesn’t want more stuff: Something they’ll eat/drink/use up. A gift that builds memories. The “let me treat you” gift. The “pay it forward” move. Something that helps others. I’ve been getting rid of knick-knacks, tchotchkes, duplicates, and things I never really used. When I give gifts, I try to avoid giving things that will just gather dust. These gifts are more meaningful than more stuff.

I subscribed to NYT app years ago for the one-year at $4.99. When the year was up, I called to cancel before I had to pay full-price. Guy asked if I’d keep it if it was still $4.99 for another year. “Oh! That’s very generous.” Years later, I am still paying $4.99, even after I expressed how guilty I was feeling about it. They literally won’t let me cancel. 😂

I have a gift idea for elderly women that has been greatly appreciated by the recipient. So many times they want to do something for the Lord, but feel they can do nothing. I fill a basket with cards, get well, sympathy, thinking of you, blank cards, etc. I add postage stamps and a large print list of names and addresses of our church family with room to add more of their own.
We always give a calendar with fotos of the grandkids to my parents and the in-laws. They really appreciate it 🙂 Also, I love giving a one year magazine subscription to someone with a special hobby or interest. For instance if they love to cook, a monthly magazine with seasonal recipes or if they love to go camping, an outdoor / hiking magazine. This way, they can “use it up” and pass it on after reading through it, but still have a whole year of fresh ideas.

Gift certificates for ice cream, ice skating or children’s museum.
Thank you Diana, I appreciate this as I do have people in my life that like to receive gifts. One piece of feedback I’d like you to consider for future gift guides, would be items that don’t take the life of someone, such as leather does. I know many care for animals and the environment and often don’t see that the item they are holding was one someone not something. I know it’s not everyone’s purpose to be merciful to all God’s creatures, but maybe for those who do care, it could be just something to consider for the future. Thank you for considering it.❤
