The Church is portrayed as the bride of Christ, a covenant union of believers in Jesus Christ who accept His atoning grace and salvation.
The church is the bride of Christ, a metaphor used in the Christian Bible to describe God’s relationship with His beloved bride, the church. The church is set apart as Christ’s bride, the Lamb’s wife, and is sanctified by His blood. The body imagery stresses the Church in Christ as a living organic unity composed of a multiplicity. The bride imagery nuances the relationship between Christ and the Church in three ways: wives are to take their unique cur from the purpose of the church in its relation to Christ: “Wives, be subject to your husbands, as to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife, as Christ is the head of the Church, His body, and is himself its.”
The Bible emphasizes that a marriage should be a picture or a reflection of Christ’s love for His people. The church is made up of people who enter into eternal life with Him. God loves us and desires to have a relationship with us, which is why Christ died for mankind. The representation of the Christ-Church union as a marriage covenant emerges explicitly in the correlation between a man and his wife and that of Christ and the Church (Eph. 5:32).
The Church is Jesus’s bride, “the wife of the Lamb.” When we admire a man, respect him, appreciate him, and revere him, we are careful what we say about his wife, especially in public. The Church is being prepared to be the Bride of Christ, and through our faith in Christ and the power of the Holy Spirit, we are united together with Christ in His victory and authority.

Why is Jesus called the bridegroom and the church the bride?
Jesus reveals himself as the bridegroom at the end of his life through the Eucharist and on the Cross. The Last Supper is a wedding banquet where Jesus offers himself as a gift to his followers. On the Cross, Jesus gives himself to humanity forever. Jesus offers himself to the Church. Christ and the Church are like a married couple. The Catechism says, “The Church is the spotless bride of the spotless Lamb…He has joined her with himself in an everlasting covenant and never stops caring for her as for his own body”.
Waiting for the Wedding Feast The Old Testament said that God and man would be united in Jesus. The New Testament explains why Jesus is called the bridegroom. Jesus gave his life so that we could live in him. We wait for the life to come, the wedding supper of the Lamb (Revelation 19:7), when we will live forever with Jesus. How does God prepare his bride?
Jesus is making his bride pure and holy, and we are getting ready for the marriage of the Lamb. This means accepting the washing of his living word. And it involves the good deeds of the saints. We must receive the word and let it grow in our hearts to produce good works (Eph. 2:10).
James 1:21: Stop sinning and accept God’s word with kindness. It can save your soul. Our Lord is preparing the church to be glorious. He speaks to us, and his word is alive in our hearts. Jesus’ preparation of the glorious bride is both quality and quantity. The word brings growth and purity.
What does it mean when the church is a bride?
The bride of Christ is the universal church, made up of all believers from all times and places. The church waits for Christ to return and for heaven and earth to be one. The picture of the church as a bride shows that Christ’s relationship with the church is permanent. From the beginning, marriage was meant to be between a man and a woman (Gen. 2:24; Matt. 19:5). But it was also a picture of Christ’s relationship with the church.
How does marriage reflect Christ’s love for the church?
Faithful Love. Jesus is faithful to his church. The husband must be faithful to his wife. In verse 31, we read, “A man shall leave his parents and be united with his wife.” This union is about commitment and faithfulness. In Paul’s time, people changed partners easily. A Christian marriage is a committed and faithful love.
Understanding Love. Jesus knows us. He knows us. He knows our weaknesses. Peter tells husbands in 1 Peter 3:7 to live with their wives in a respectful way. This word “understanding” means knowledgeable love. The husband knows his wife. He knows her. The husband must learn about his wife. I joke that I’m a lifetime student at the University of Christie. I’ll never graduate. I’m a lifelong learner. I’m always trying to learn how to love and serve her.
Caring Love. Paul says, “Husbands should love their wives as they love themselves. He who loves his wife loves himself. No one hates their own body, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ does the church. We are members of his body.
How does Christ see his bride?
He cleanses her. Jesus knows more about the flaws and failures of his church than anyone else. He knows all the evil going on. He knows our sins. Jesus doesn’t ignore sin. He died to cleanse his church of sin. He doesn’t take sin lightly. He is the Savior of the Church (Ephesians 5:23). Jesus takes sin in the church very seriously. He knows her sins. But he still loves her. He chose her, loves her, and is cleansing her from her sin. He died to make her holy (Ephesians 5:26). He rose and lives to cleanse her with the washing of water by the word (Ephesians 5:26). Do our words match his? Do we help her by speaking words that cleanse, sanctify, and build her up? Or do we oppose him, insult her, or tear her down with the words we speak? One day, Jesus will present the church to himself in splendor. All will see the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God. Christ is preparing his church for the wedding. He is purging sin and adorning his bride for the day when she will be presented to him. Every eye will see her, at last, in unparalleled majesty.
Hard Words of Love. We might ask about Jesus’ hard words for his bride. The Bridegroom says these words in Revelation 3:15–16. “I know your works: you are neither good nor bad. Be either cold or hot! If you’re not hot or cold, I’ll spit you out.Love for the Bride of Christ means speaking out against sin. Love for the Bride of Christ means speaking out against the sins of churches and saints. But we should be careful about how we speak about these failures.

What is the role of the church as the bride of Christ?
The Church as the Bride in Ephesians 5:22-33. The Church is the Bride of Christ. Christ is the Head of the Church. We have an intimate relationship with Christ as individuals and as the Church. This is closer than an earthly marriage. Jesus is our leader, director, and guide. Jesus is our perfect Husband. He takes care of us. He wants us to be perfect, without any flaws. He is our Husband who always acts for our good. The Church must submit to Christ. To be subject means to let someone guide and influence us. We can refuse to be influenced by Jesus. That’s wrong. It’s good for us to let Him guide our lives. Submitting to Him makes us stronger. Submitting to Him enriches us.
What does the Bible say about the church being the bride of Christ?
In Christian theology, the bride is the church, with Jesus as the bridegroom. Ephesians 5:22–33 compares the union of husband and wife to that of Christ and the church. It is a popular image in the church. Churches interpret the metaphor in different ways. Most believe it always refers to the church.
Christ as a bridegroom. The Gospel of John says Jesus Christ is the bridegroom and the bride. The one who has the bride is the bridegroom. The friend of the bridegroom who hears him is happy because of the bridegroom’s voice. This makes me happy.
How does Jesus and the church relate to marriage?
“Husbands, love your wives as Christ loved the church and gave Himself for her” (Eph. 5:25). This means men must lead with love that is willing to die for their wives. As Jesus says in Luke 22:26, “Let the leader serve.” John Piper, “A Metaphor of Christ and the Church,” The Standard 74:2 (February 1984): 27, 29. Alvera and Berekely Mickelsen replied, “Marriage as Submission?” “Response from the Mickelsens,” The Standard 74:2 (February 1984): 30. Ephesians 5:31 is a quote from Genesis 2:24: “A man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one.” Then Paul adds in verse 32: “This is a great mystery. I take it to mean Christ and the church.” The union of man and woman in marriage is a mystery because it reveals a truth about Christ and the church. God made a permanent union between His Son and the church. Human marriage shows God’s plan for Christ and the church. As God willed for Christ and the church to become one body, so He willed for marriage to reflect this pattern—that the husband and wife become one flesh.
