How Many Interfaith Marriages End In Divorce?

The divorce rate in the United States is significantly lower than the often-cited 50% rate, with actuaries having the lowest rate at just 17%. Protestant individuals, including 74% of all Christians, have a higher divorce rate than intermarriage. Interfaith marriages are still common in the United States, with nearly seven-in-ten married people (69%) saying that their spouse shares their religion. However, the share of marriages ending in divorce increased from the 1960s to the 1990s.

In the 1950s, 20% of marriages in the U.S. were interfaith unions, but by the first decade of the 21st century, the rate increased to 45%. The Special Marriage Act in Ahmedabad in May 2021 allows solemnization of marriages irrespective of the couple’s religion and requires parties to give consent. The share of marriages ending in divorce increased from the 1960s to the 1990s.

Interfaith marriages are more likely to end in divorce than other marriages, with certain faith pairings having higher rates of divorce. Divorce was particularly common among marriages between evangelicals and non-evangelicals (50%) and evangelicals and non-religious individuals (61%). In Australia, there were 127,161 marriages registered in 2022, the highest number on record.

The divorce rate for interfaith marriages appears to be higher, as much as 42%. In the landscape of interfaith marriages, discerning the patterns and causes for divorce becomes indispensable for a comprehensive discourse. The average marriage lasts 8 years, and the divorce rate among married women with a nonreligious upbringing is around 5%.

Are interfaith marriages more prone to divorce?

Other surveys did not find that interfaith couples divorce more or less than other couples. But they found that certain combinations made it much more likely that the marriage would end in divorce. The most likely interfaith marriages to end in divorce were Evangelicals married to non-believers. The more different religions, the more likely divorce.

Some research suggests that marriages between people of the same religion last longer than interfaith marriages. If this is true, the rise in religious intermarriage may not be as big as it seems. The Religious Landscape Study only measures marriages that are still intact today. It is possible there were more intermarriages before 1960 that have since ended in divorce.
