How To Deny Marriage Proposal?

In this guide, Sarah Greene discusses the importance of politely rejecting a marriage proposal and maintaining harmony. She suggests 10 polite ways to say “NO”: I’m honored, but I’m sorry, I wish I could split into two, please excuse me; I have another appointment today. Refusing a proposal requires a delicate balance of honesty, respect, and empathy. The guide also discusses how to turn down a marriage proposal but still continue to date.

For those who turn down a proposal, it is important to be both honest and mindful of your partner’s feelings. It is essential to articulate your reasons for your answer and acknowledge your partner’s feelings. When a proposal is rejected, it is important to tell the person how long you’ve waited for him to make a move and to express your feelings based on your discussions and understanding.

To reject someone nicely, follow 15 healthy ways: 1. Be direct and honest; 2. Do not wait for days; 3. Don’t mention their traits; 4. Do not sugarcoat your words. Rejecting an unwelcome proposal involves giving a firm, but polite “no”; 3. Keep your distance; and 4. Ask a friend to be with you for support.

Remember that dating a lot of people at once is unhealthy and risky. If you are sure that a proposal is not a good match, simply say your interest and don’t put too much thought into their feelings. To ease this conversation, try the opposite.

  • I don’t think I’ll get married till 30 simply because I know I need to mature more to be a responsible spouse and parent. Not that I’m doing anything bad but I’m busy accomplishing my goals, working and learning more about life. I’m a teacher and I know how hard it is raising a child and teaching them. I mean I’m nice to them but I know it’s a big responsibility having your own.

  • Mufti Menk you’re truly a gem. It’s a treat listening to you. You make religion so beautiful and accessible and do not have a myopic outlook.Lucky to have such a knowledgeable person like you to guide us. May the Almighty bless you and your loved ones with good health, happiness and success in this life and the next. Ameen

  • I urge you to clarify and im sure you meant it in a more forgiving way. But This is a little dangerous…. At the end of the day, everyone is human and everyone is trying. But if a proposal is rejected by the girl (or her family) they should not be made to feel ashamed of it. I dont doubt that the proposal may be from a good person (I believe everyone is good- some are just struggling to see that), but even then, if a girl has instincts, if even the family has instincts that they aren’t the perfect match, then it’s best to let it be. There can be good men/women who simply won’t work well together.

  • Salams, Mufti Menk! : ) I usually like your advice & agree most of the time. This is a rare respectful time I can’t agree. I realize marriage is not all about money, & agree the person should be good. But from experience, I have seen too many young people rush into marriages, young women & young men, without knowing what really lay ahead for them in marriage. It’s difficult enough to meld two different personalities together, let alone having to have added burdens over finances Then worrying that if a child comes along, how they will feed them & provide for them? I definitely think that religious views should be in sync. You can’t expect to change your spouse after marriage. I think that the potential bride & groom’s families need to have realistic expectations of their children & their children’s new spouses. Perfection doesn’t exist! Not in my child, nor in theirs. We weren’t perfect when we were starting out as newlyweds either. Everyone has their faults. Expecting a young man to have his education & be able to comfortably support himself, my daughter & their children, is reasonable. Especially if he has any added obligations to help take care of, such as his parents or other family members. It’s not fair for a young woman to marry him & then have to deal with money issues, or have to go without things that are reasonably expected, because the groom was not financially prepared to handle a wife & family & his other responsibilities. That is a recipe for disaster. I think that telling young people & their parents to just “accept the proposal”, or “ask your daughter”, is reckless advice.

  • I am waiting an proposal….. and I tell the truth that I pray to receive this proposal to go to work in the country what I love so much… and is country of my wife. • Narrated ‘Umar bin Al-Khattab: Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) said, “The reward of deeds depends upon the intention and every person will get the reward according to what he has intended. Sahih al-Bukhari 54 Narrated Sa’d bin Abi Waqqas: Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) said, “You will be rewarded for whatever you spend for Allah’s sake even if it were a morsel which you put in your wife’s mouth.” Sahih al-Bukhari 56 Narrated Abu Mas’ud: The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “If a man spends on his family (with the intention of having a reward from Allah) sincerely for Allah’s sake then it is a (kind of) alms-giving in reward for him. • Assalamualaikum You are absolutely right, but what about boys, I am waiting for a proposal, who ever comes to me they want every thing from me, they want beauty, slim, good qualification, height and property. My height is little bit short it’s not my fault na 😭 my heart is in full of pain and depressed from this people and can’t see my parents Gloomy but I believe in Allah that he will surely give me a good spouse Insha Allah .❤️🤲

  • what’s actually causing the disaster is the deceitful, insincere natures of people and then the in laws interfering – the same in laws that coddle their children and never let them mature – and for that reason, it can’t be right to just accept any proposal that comes your way. Parents are in such a hurry, no family does any due diligence of character – big mess

  • Al hamdoulillah, no matter how hard it’s to find a spouse in this dunya Allah will not deprive anyone of marriage and happiness of the soul in paradise. It’s a divine promise so let’s remain patient and grateful for the decree of Allah because He’s Al Hakim. My brothers let us remember hoor-al-ayn and don’t fall into zina. Let’s not be depressed because we are poor or unattractive, all these things come from the unlimited wisdom of Allah.\r And for the sisters who don’t receive a request it’s the same, don’t be sad because Allah certainly saves you from a perverse marriage or from a great misfortune.

  • I was willing to leave every bad memories and deeds behind just to marry someone and I offered her to give me one year just to finish my graduation and get a job. And she rejected me…. But I dont have much regrets as I felt like she was supposed to meet me for a purpose and I expressed my feelings for fer so I’ve done my part.

  • I was recently rejected for the sole purpose that my father’s mother was Shia, and the father of the girl who I proposed to said that we cannot take someone who descends from that family, and that it will open a door on us with unknown consequences. Keep in mind that myself, my father and brother are all Sunni, and the girl’s father literally had no other reason to state when he rejected me (along with his wife and the girl’s siblings) other than the fact that I am related to someone who is Shia. The girl tried to convince her family for a while, but she gave up because she was afraid to upset her parents, and as soon as she left, they accepted another person and she said yes out of desperation. Every day I become more amazed by how people think and judge, subhana’allah.

  • I said no to my long term relationship because that guy was not same anymore, i couldn’t see him as the father of my children, idk if I did wrong coz I was in a 10 years of relationship, but when his mom forced me to marry him i didn’t felt right anymore, he turned Alcoholic and started to get more close to his female employee didn’t do anything when i resented I hope Allah forgives me

  • Brothers and Sister in Islam, Marry to a practicing Muslim . And You never will get a practicing bride-groom until you become one. .. .. If the bride is from a poor background? don’t depend on her father’s status. And If the Groom is not rich or financially stable and as a bride if your father has the ability to support him let it be… \r ..\r Just look for righteousness.\r ….\r Remember our Prophet sallallahu alaihi sallam married her daughter Fathima RA with Ali Ra… and Ali RA paid the MAHARANA by selling his armor which was gifted by the Prophet SWS himself. ….. . .Remember after death we can not come in life to undo our deeds… May AllahSWT bless us all with right life partner. .. *However, 1st think about learning your DEEN.

  • I rejected proposals coz I’m a teenager now. I have to complete study and get a good job and I have to be successful. But these toxic people want me to get married. People say once you are older than 20 you won’t get proposals, so you better get married. It’s my life, my choice, my decision. If I don’t get proposal later, it’s ok. I’m ready to accept it. Marriage isn’t my first priority. I’m not dying to get married. So let it be.

  • The challenge in many proposals is that most people look for a husband that is much higher in status than the wife in terms of wealth and money. The flipside is wanting a wife for looks only (no personality) in the hopes that she will ‘match’ your elevated wealth status. The idea of finding a good hearted husband / wife is never discussed nor even open for discussion.

  • this is common action of many men and women.. many times men will only see the picture of potential spouses and reject them right away ! same goes for women but its more common for women to reject for wealth.. we can have our own likes and dislikes but we should remember the Prophet(saw) words to marry someone for their religion and piety ! Just like this dunya, money and looks will fade away

  • A beautiful and humble sister in my class recently rejected my interest in her. I’m heartbroken that in spite of my Isthikara she said no. I hope that someone I love just as much, or more, comes into my life later down the line- someone who loves me more. I hope this sister will one day regret turning me down.

  • @Mufti Menk I love a woman, who cheated on me (had sex with two or more men) and im heartbroken at her. She doesnt love me anymore. But i want her badly. I want her to come to the deen of Islam, but i myself am not a good muslim, nor do i believe fully in Islam. Yet i love her. People make mistakes. I want her to come to Islam and someday be my wife. What do i do? Ive even met her family and siblings. I need guidance and help.

  • I think the cover photos of your articles should be more formal as like your content.. Mean, I noticed the coverphoto of ypur articles like something funny, or childish content.. My personal opinion is It should be more sophisticated and more formal not funny type.. Dont take it as hater.. I love and like your articles.. But your article cover photos I think it should be changed..

  • There are too many of us who look for a spouse that will bring us financial aid in life. We become very short sighted and we sacrifice soo much for this life, we forget that we will be raised again, only to find we didn’t sacrifice enough for the next life. Consider your spouses carefully and consider each proposal with an open mind and heart. Do not allow yourselves to set your mind for a specific ‘type’. You can’t be looking for the perfect spouse if you, yourself are far from perfect. May Allah grant us all greatness and May He always protect the Mufti and his family. Aameen

  • My best Friend from young he just few month ago married and now they got an inheritance and are multi multi millonare Allahu Akbar Allahumma Barik and they really help so many Alhamdulillah May Allah te’ala bless them ameen MashaAllah I am happy for them actually we are close friends let say brothers Alhamdulillah 🤲🏻💜🌹📿

  • in malaysia you`ll find alot of the woman out there wanted a man with over 3000 ringgit of salary per month when my dad only got like 1200 per month and yet we live comfortably and even for me who painstakingly had my own small restaurant i work on and i didnt get like more than a 1000 per month but i felt happy and leisure for Allah gives me the income everyday not every month, Alhamdulillah, and yet the girls over in my country just wanted man with alot of money doesnt matter they are good person or not anymore

  • Assalmuallikom Mufti. With all the respect and regards, Mufti I’m from Myanmar and currently my country is in need of urgent attention as our democratically elected leaders including State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi, President Win Myint along with senior government officials, and the elected members of parliament have now been detained by the military. It is a military coup happening right now in Myanmar( Burma) and it is something no citizen wants to experience again and this especially is a major problem for all the muslims here as the military will use the muslims as a pawn to create religious chaos and turmoil to gain control and power. I plead you to help us spread the news to our other Muslim brothers and sisters all over the world and let the world know of the situation here better. Please please help us all by using your influence to bring light upon the truth. Please keep us in your prayers. May Allah (SWT) always bless you and your loved ones in every way possible. With Hope’s, Azizah

  • 🙃 my parents both reject the man I love because he is not from the same cultural background as me. They both admit and agree he ticks all the Islamic requirements and that Islamically they should allow us to get married but culturally they cannot accept it or facilitate/bless our Nikkah. Not sure how long I should wait for them to come round to it. Meanwhile our life is in limbo since we both don’t want to marry anyone else.

  • We need your dua. My dear brothers one brother and I love him for Allah can not worship Allah as he wishes. He would love to admit every position in prayer.
