Is Fire Emblem Engage Bad?

Fire Emblem Engage, the seventeenth installment of the Fire Emblem franchise, was released on the Nintendo Switch on January 20, 2023. It is the first Fire Emblem developed internally by Intelligent Systems and is known for its innovative and Eastern-style tactical role-playing games. However, the game’s story and structure lack ambition compared to its predecessors, making it a predictable and straightforward romp.

The game’s combat mechanics have never been better, but Engage has refined almost every aspect of its turn-based battles in smaller ways. The game’s premise is impossible to assess without comparisons to its predecessors, as it feels fresh and new while paying homage to Fire Emblem’s storied past with the inclusion of iconic characters in the Emblem Rings.

Fire Emblem Engage is difficult to evaluate due to its poor writing, which is far more competent than most Fire Emblem games. While Engage shows refreshing flashes of brilliance on the gameplay side, it is mired in mechanics. Some fans argue that Engage is not a bad game, especially when including Emblems from the best Fire Emblem games, but it is not as good as its predecessors.

In conclusion, Fire Emblem Engage is not a bad game but not the best in the series. While the game has some strengths, it lacks the ambition and storytelling ambition of its predecessors.

Is Three Houses better than Engage?

Thanks. Engage has better gameplay but less customization and isn’t as replayable. Formerly known as maro_man. Three Houses has a better story, characters, and ways to play/replay, while Engage has better gameplay/combat and visuals. You’re on the GameFAQs message boards as a guest. Nintendo Switch; How does Engage compare to 3 Houses?

I’m planning to start one of these this weekend. I only care about combat and customization. The story and characters just need to be good. Thanks.

Do people like Fire Emblem Engage?

There are some issues. Many progress systems are hidden in menus I didn’t see until 30 hours in. At a certain bond level, you can start inheriting a lot of skills. To inherit, you have to talk to the Emblem hero in a bond conversation. If it’s Alear, you can bond with Emblems easily. You can talk to Emblem heroes in Somniel. It’s harder when it’s one of your companions because you have to go to a menu to start the conversation. You have to equip a skill to use it. It took about 35 hours and several frustrating battles before I figured it out. Thanks, Engage. Fire Emblem Engage’s combat is seductive. I spent over 70 hours in a game that has little else to recommend it because of this. If you’ve never played Fire Emblem, this is a good place to start. If you want to feel the same emotions, play Three Houses or Fates again. Fire Emblem Engage launches on January 20th on Nintendo Switch.

Can you marry in engage?

The game is still about the characters, with each one having their own story. The stories between the main character and their followers are mostly romantic. The game features a marriage with the pact ring system. Once the player has units at A-rank, they can use a pact ring to make a unit S-rank. They can only do this once, and the cutscene shows it as an engagement. Fire Emblem Engage doesn’t limit pact rings by gender. All characters react the same to the proposal, regardless of the player’s gender. It depends on what the player wants. They won’t get the same mechanics from marriage, but they’ll still get character connections and chances for shipping.

Is Fire Emblem Engage good or bad?

It’s fun, but it could be better. That’s why Fire Emblem fans aren’t respected. The games are just products to sell waifu images, not art.

Was Fire Emblem Engage rushed?

Fire Emblem Engage gets you into the action right away, with quick tutorials that teach the basics. These will help you survive the big battles ahead. Series veterans will know what to expect here. The Weapons Triangle is back (swords beat axes, axes beat lances, lances beat swords), but this time it’s been tweaked to break your opponent and disarm them. It’s a small change, but it affects how you play. You can still plan fancy flanking maneuvers and risky stealth missions behind enemy lines. You can also open up routes by breaking scenery and unleash huge chain attacks. It’s always thrilling to take on seemingly impossible challenges. You experiment, make mistakes, and try different strategies until you find the perfect combination to defeat your enemies. All of that good stuff is here in spades across countless battles that often run for a good hour at a time. It’s proper sweat-inducing stuff, the kind of thing fans of this genre will love. The combat maps are full of surprises. You can rescue bystanders, grab useful treasures, defend points, and avoid environmental tricks and traps. This is great tactical action. It’ll keep you playing into the night, on your toes, and will punish you if you’re not paying attention. We love it.

Is Fire Emblem Engage a success?

Fire Emblem Engage didn’t do as well as Three Houses, even though it came out a year earlier. Fans didn’t like the removal of social elements. Engage had new gameplay mechanics, but its characters, story, and social elements were not as good as in the recent entries. The Fire Emblem series has become one of Nintendo’s most popular franchises over the past decade. It has several different characters in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and has released many new games. Fire Emblem Engage has been out for a year. It brought new ideas to the series, but many players felt it was a step back from Fire Emblem: Three Houses. Fire Emblem Engage never reached the same popularity as Three Houses. The Fire Emblem series went from near cancellation to one of Nintendo’s flagship franchises after the success of the Nintendo 3DS Fire Emblem Awakening. The franchise is still going strong, but fans are divided between those who prefer the classic style and those who prefer the modern entries. Many fans saw Fire Emblem Engage as a return to the franchise’s pre-Awakening style, which made it divisive among fans of recent entries.

Can I romance in Fire Emblem Engage?

You can’t romance a companion until later in the game. The event happens in a side story that starts after the plot twist where Alear becomes an Emblem. Some paralogues require you to fight your Emblems to unlock their max bond level. You don’t fight Alear, but you can give the pact ring to any companion with an “A” rank to romance them. It’s not just romance. Alear can bond with characters regardless of gender. Some of these bonds will be romantic, while others will be platonic. A male Alear can bond with big daddy thiccums Vander, but since he’s one of the platonic options, you’ll have to rely on your own ideas to do the romantic heavy lifting. I romanced the dancer Seadall because he was the cutest person I had the highest rank with. When you give the ring to your chosen, they’ll leave you a memento on the desk in Alears chambers. I got a scarf. Seadall likes scarves.

Should I play male or female in Fire Emblem Engage?

Should you be a boy or a girl in Fire Emblem Engage? There are no major differences in Fire Emblem Engage if you choose one gender over the other. Fire Emblem Engage is the latest in Nintendo’s series of turn-based tactical strategy games. In Engage, you can play as a male or female. The series doesn’t offer as much customization as other games, but having two genders is better than one. When you start Fire Emblem Engage for the first time, you’ll see a screen with male and female options for the main character. Players must choose one form to continue. Which should they choose? There are no major differences in Fire Emblem Engage if you choose one gender over the other. The dialogue is the same, and you can talk to all characters (male or female) and use the same moves. Players might need to think about the voice acting. The male and female protagonists have male and female voice actors. Some lines might be performed differently, but the visual appearance of both heroes should be the same.

Did Fire Emblem Engage sell well?

Sales. Fire Emblem Engage was the best-selling game in Japan during its first week. It sold about 145,000 copies. By March 31, 2023, Engage had sold 1.61 million copies worldwide.

Yasuhisa Baba; Kazuki Komai; Hiroki Morishita; Takeru Kanazaki; Fumihiro Isobe; Takafumi Wada; Fire Emblem Engage is a tactical role-playing game developed by Intelligent Systems and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo Switch. It is the 17th game in the Fire Emblem series. It was released on January 20, 2023. The game follows Alear, a dragon in human form, who wakes up and gets caught up in a conflict with the Fell Dragon Sombron. Alear travels the land of Elyos, fighting against the armies of Elusia and Sombrons. The player controls Alear’s army in these battles. The game has twelve magic rings with phantasmal copies of characters from previous Fire Emblem games. Characters wearing these rings can gain power from summoning and merging with phantoms. Both Alear and Sombron want to control the rings. Having all twelve will let them do something very magical. Intelligent Systems created a new art style for the game, with colorful characters and 3D models. This was different from earlier games in the series, which often used 2D portraits for dialogue. It was a heroic fantasy quest where the protagonist grows and matures to save the world.

Why did Fire Emblem Engage fail?

The best parts of Fire Emblem: Three Houses weren’t in Fire Emblem Engage. The two games were made at about the same time. Three Houses was free to make new things, but Engage was more like the old games. Engage felt like a step back after Three Houses. The story in Fire Emblem Engage is the game’s biggest problem. It lacks many of the elements that made Three Houses a hit and made Fire Emblem one of Nintendo’s most profitable franchises. There were few real relationships in Engage. Generals and their units mostly met in cutscenes, but this was underdeveloped. Characters drifted in and out of scenes, making them superfluous to the storyline. The dialogue was bad and didn’t help the plot. The main characters, returning Fire Emblem characters, and especially the villains were boring and just there to move the plot along. This might have worked in a stronger story, but fans wanted the storytelling style of Three Houses. Some character relationships were created in Engage. Characters could find family members, but these were revealed suddenly. They didn’t have a good reason to engage the audience, and they seemed like cheap tricks to create drama. Characters died without developing, making plot points feel hollow. Three Houses made it easy to talk to every character because anyone could contribute to the story and the world. Bad dialogue made conversations a chore.

  • Engage had flaws but 3 Houses was a lightning in a bottle game, it came out at the right time at the right place with the specific appeal that can’t be repeated not even with a sequel game. Nothing would’ve been able to step up to it. They could’ve made a super grim and serious FE4 remake with all the details the FE community wants, it still would’ve paled in comparison.

  • I need to replay Three Houses since it’s admittedly been a while but as of now I prefer Engage. On the aesthetics side Three Houses has decent art and UI but such ugly ass in-game assets, environments and canned character animations that take me out of the story during cutscenes (not to mention most cutscenes play over these hideous low quality PNGs) Engage is comparatively a lot prettier, though it having a brighter color palette may be the main contributor to that. The character designs vary wildly lol, and I wouldn’t blame anyone for hating the look of all these anime freaks, but a lot of the designs grew on me the more I got to know each character’s personality. Overall I’d say the Three Houses characters have the better designs but there’s a lot of good ones in here. And both games have excellent soundtracks, I prefer Engage’s as a whole, but Three Houses has some select tracks that go above and beyond it. In terms of gameplay I’m a lot more foggy on all the minutiae of Three Houses, but one thing I do remember is that this game is so piss easy on hard mode that by time you reach the half way point, your house units are borderline undefeatable and you just steamroll the rest of the game’s maps. Which sucks because the battles are your only repreive of what actually makes up the bulk of the game, being the monestary. This is of course unless you’d like to play on maddening, which is just shifts the imbalance against you rather than for you (unless they changed it since I last played it in 2020) Engage comparatively has a lot of weird issues (chief among them being how units at the start of the game just seem to be flat out worse than ones you get later) but fares a lot better with the balancing.
