Princess Diana Spencer, born into a noble family, was considered a commoner before her marriage to Prince Charles. She was not a peer of the royal family and did not hold a title within the peerage system. Do the Spencers have royal blood?

Last month, I looked at Kate Middleton’s ancestry. I realized I’d never written about one of Prince William’s Spencer ancestors. Princess Diana’s grandparents, John the 7th Earl Spencer and Lady Cynthia Hamilton, are descended from the royal Stewart/Stuart family, which ruled in Scotland from the late 14th century to 1714. If they had been real, several Spencer-Hamilton ancestors would have been ahead of the Hanover/Windsor family in line to the throne. But in reality, all but one of the examples I’ll mention were children born to royal mistresses. The one exception came from a marriage that wasn’t valid.

Although illegitimacy has been used to debar claims to royal succession, there have been occasions when royal bastards did take the throne. In other times, they tried. The most recent attempt in Britain was Charles II’s son, the Duke of Monmouth, trying to unseat his uncle James VII/II. Monmouth was the ancestor of the Dukes of Buccleuch, including Princess Alice and Sarah. I’ll focus on Spencer ancestors from the Stewart-Tudor line, which starts with James V, King of Scots. He was the son of James IV and Margaret Tudor. Cynthia Hamilton’s 16th-century ancestor, the Duc de Chatelherault, was the closest heir to the Scottish crown during Mary Queen of Scots’ lifetime. Lady Cynthias ancestors included several illegitimate children of earlier Stewarts, including King James IV. The Stewart kings were very prolific in having children outside of marriage, but not so successful in marriage.
