Was Diana Bulimia Before Her Marriage?

Princess Diana, the Queen of Wales, was known for her self-destructive behavior and struggle with an eating disorder. In Season 4 of “The Crown,” she revealed her struggles with bulimia in 1992, after her separation from Prince Charles. In a 1995 interview with BBC Panorama, Diana admitted to having a particularly bad fit of bulimia, eating everything she could possibly find.

In the early 1990s, Diana gave a series of interviews promising to share her true story, including her attempt to die by suicide on several occasions during the early years of her marriage. Her tumultuous marriage to Prince Charles and subsequent divorce had affected her self-confidence and mental health.

Diana’s condition reportedly started prior to her marriage to Charles, according to Andrew Morton’s 1992 biography, Diana: Her True Story. She struggled with bulimia for many years before seeking professional help. It is difficult to know when exactly it started, but it was “in full swing” by the time of their honeymoon. Diana may initially have been treated for anorexia.

In a 1995 interview with the BBC, Diana described bulimia as a “symptom of what was going on in my marriage.” The couple had two sons, Prince William and Prince Eugenie, who were born in 1982. Diana’s discussion helped the public better understand the nature of the disorder and supported the notion that eating disorders can arise as unhealthy methods of coping with turmoil.

In conclusion, Princess Diana’s struggles with bulimia were a result of her troubled relationship with Prince Charles and her own personal struggles with the disorder.

  • Kia Thank you so much for this article I really appreciate it you’re about my age and I was certainly alive when all of this was going on though I didn’t see the footage or read the book about Diana but I was struggling severely with bulimia and anorexia in the 90s I came so close to dying like 100 times I’m 39 years old now I’m lucky to be alive and I’m still struggling. I’ve reached a strong level of recovery many times But I’ve also relapse just as hard. Princess Diana was 1 of the 1st to say it publicly And she’s definitely 1 of my heroes. Paula Abdul was another 1 of the 1st 2 publicly admitted.Maybe Brittany Murphy would be alive today if she had the courage to come out and say she was bully mac Karen carpenter Was terrified to speak of it publicly. And for that she is no longer with us. This is an amazing article I speak openly and candidly about my eating disorder. I am definitely posting this!

  • I developed anorexia in 1991 which filtered through to bulimia in 1992/93. I loved Diana but not really until later. My eating disorder ran parallel with her with the same secrecy. I was doing my a levels in 1995 when this interview was shown, and I remember it being on and everyone talking about it. Every time I see her on something I feel so sad and a real sense of injustice at her death. Just not fair x

  • I was only 9 when she died, so I wasn’t aware of who she even was til after. Now, though, I find myself fascinated by her as a whole. Honestly, the more I learn, it’s no wonder she was bulimic. She was in this massive pressure cooker and rather than exploding on people, as I’m sure she’d well have liked to do at times. she imploded so she could hide the pain she was in. Bulimia is, society wise at least. seen as widely shameful, so perhaps Diana describing it led sufferers to realize that even she, one who seemed to have everything. could have her secrets and that there was nothing to be ashamed of if they were out there in the dark.

  • Imagine of Diana was still here and she could help with this cause possibly. I wouldn’t want her to do that if it would hurt here. I listen to you and know this was you but you talk about this disease daily helping people. That has to be good mentally because now you actually believe what you say. Maybe if people with this disease could start talking this way. Like a therapist per say to her therapist could change the mind set. You believe whatever it is about yourself. You create your beliefs by what you hear and repeat in a way.
