Mithridatism is the practice of protecting oneself against a poison by gradually self-administering small amounts. The word comes from Mithridates VI, King of Pontus, who was afraid of being poisoned and ate small amounts to try to become immune.
Background edit. Mithridates VI’s father, Mithridates V, was poisoned by his attendants. After this, Mithridates VI’s mother ruled Pontus until a male heir came of age. Mithridates and his brother were in competition for the throne. His mother favored his brother. Mithridates suspected plots against him and knew his mother was involved in his father’s death. He felt pain in his stomach during meals and thought his mother had poisoned him. He fled into the wild after other assassination attempts. While there, he ate non-lethal amounts of poison to become immune to all known poisons.
