U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders’ 1988 honeymoon in the Soviet Union during the height of the Cold War is held up by his opponents as evidence of dubious judgment and even Communist sympathies. Sanders was bare-chested, towel-draped, and sang “This Land Is Your Land” to his hosts in the Soviet Union in the spring of 1988. Sanders and his wife did travel to Yaroslavl, a city in the Soviet Union, after a New York Times story about Sanders’s 1988 attempt to forge a sister-city relationship between Burlington, Vermont, and the Russian city of Yaroslavl. They discovered that Sanders really did practice the socialist solidarity he preached about rhetorically. During Bernie’s mayoral tenure, Burlington formed an alliance with the Soviet city of Yaroslavl. In 1988, Sanders, then the mayor of Burlington, Vermont, worked to forge a sister-city relationship with Yaroslavl, a historic Russian city a few hours northeast of Moscow. In doing so, according to a POLITICO reporter, Bernie Sanders did not seem to gloss over the problems in the USSR.
A new report from the Washington Post shows he blasted U.S. foreign and domestic policy at a Russian city. Bernie Sanders and his wife had a 10-day honeymoon in the Soviet Union, but calling it a “honeymoon trip” was a joke.
