They discovered that Sanders really did practice the socialist solidarity he preached about rhetorically. During Bernie’s mayoral tenure, Burlington formed an alliance with the Soviet city of Yaroslavl. In 1988, Sanders, then the mayor of Burlington, Vermont, worked to forge a sister-city relationship with Yaroslavl, a historic Russian city a few hours northeast of Moscow. In doing so, according to a POLITICO reporter, Bernie Sanders did not seem to gloss over the problems in the USSR.
