Why Does Makeup Make My Eyes Water?

Watery eyes can be caused by various factors, including dust, allergens, dry eyes, and makeup. To minimize the effect, it is essential to determine the cause of your eyes watering and use eye drops or lubricants designed for dry eyes. Foundations, eyeliners, mascara, and foundation can create a barrier between the skin and the air, which can cause eyes to water. Additionally, the oil in your skin can block the absorption of makeup.

To avoid watering your eyes during makeup application, dry them out by staring and using clean makeup tools. Clean brushes and sponges should be cleaned weekly to keep germs at bay. Exposure to pollen, pet dander, mites, and fumes can also cause eyes to turn red, itchy, and watery.

To prevent water from rolling down while applying makeup, stop, breathe, tilt your head up, and try not to blink until the tear dries up and settles. Waterproof mascara is tougher to remove, so it will be more irritating to your eyes.

Preservatives and synthetic fragrances in makeup can cause watery eyes. Preservatives are essential for prolonging the shelf life of products, while synthetic fragrances can lead to allergic reactions. To avoid this, opt for an eyeliner that is not irritating and avoid using eyeliners that contain ingredients that can irritate the skin or eyes. Some cosmetics may contain ingredients that can irritate the skin or eyes, leading to watery eyes and a runny nose.

In summary, watery eyes can be caused by various factors, such as dust, allergens, dry eyes, and makeup. To minimize the effect, use eye drops or lubricants designed for dry eyes and avoid using makeup that can clog the meibomian glands located on the waterline of the eye.

Once the skin is even, use the clean side of the sponge to add blush to areas that need it. Don’t use too much product. Redness and blotchiness will go away on their own. • Finally answer to why my makeup is ruined every single day with my eyes watering from the outside edge and as you said once it starts there is simply no stopping it. By the end of the day my eyeshadow is a blackened mess from the continual watering and the make up under and around the out edge of my eye is a hot mess. Thank you thank you thank you

  • I am big fan of yours. I learn smokey eye makeup i learn almost fabulous makeup for my own face. I was begnier in makeup but you make me perfect almost. With limited products i can do well. The best thing is that your vedios are to the point and worth learning. Plz can you tell me eyeliner trick for small eyes.

  • Liked, Subscribed, Thanks for the watery eyes info so far. I haven’t worn make up, Ever. I only use a little concealer under my eyes and a little bit on my noise, and blemishes if any. I’ve just gotten some nice brushes, and would like to be able to have that poorless look on my checks and around my nose. I don’t know how to use brushes for eye shadow. I’ve watched so many articles, and can’t get it.

  • Hi! Love these kind of articles. my question is I have very bad eyesight and when I apply masacra, I need to use a small compact mirror to help me apply masacra so I don’t have a free hand to help use something to prevent getting masacra on my lids. Do you have any tips for this? Also, there are a lot of makeup tips out there for how to put makeup on yourself but can you give us tip on how to put makeup on others. I don’t mean this related to makeup looks or style but more along the line of like if I’m trying to apply mascara on my mom.

  • I am hoping you may cover when to put on moisturizer with sunscreen, do you wait a bit before slathering on concealer & eyeshadow base? I clean my face first thing in the am & pop in my daily contacts (they are thrown away each day). I am guilty of wetting the beauty blender, etc.. I fear I am glopping on too much too soon with my morning rush. Thanks in advance.

  • can you share trcks on how to make cream foundations look good on the skin? it does not matter what i use to prep my skin any cream foundation i tried looks very obvious on my skin, and i could deal with that but it also looks horrible, is it possible that my skin just does not like cream foundations? love your articles and hopefully will be able to order your new air brush tomorrow 😀

  • I have super oily skin. I find if I use thick foundations they sink into my pores and make them look even bigger. I’ve been using Estée Lauder double wear and I love it but would still like to find some more I love. I have lots of drug store reckon colorstay is my favorite drug store. Just wondering. Have you tried Lorac porefection foundation or Becca stay all day matte foundation? And if so what do you think?

  • I use my beauty blender dampened to spread my foundation. I didn’t realize my foundation (Nars all day weightless…) could be the cause. But I like the finish I get with my combination oily tzone skin. I may add foundation and I shadow but I was until get to work the use the eyeliner to give my eye a chase to dry up. All this time I was figuring it was my sinuses causing my eye to tease. Do you have a good eyeliner for the water for sensitive eyes to recommend?

  • I have used different foundations and different brushes also have used and not used primer but my nose ALWAYS itches!!! Is there anything I can do for it. I have very fair skin with broken capillaries since I have allergies so I do have to foundation on it. Also is it true that you should use less foundation on older skin? I am 49 and somehow lucky me my skin looks better then when I was young except those broken capillaries on my nose and cheeks. Thank you!

  • I was an ophthalmologist nurse for several years some tips that also help(eyes water because they’re actually dry, something people don’t realize).1) put eye drops in before applying makeup, and using a eye gel at night(tip to put drops in is close your eye, tilt held back and to the right for the left eye and apply the drop in the corner of the eye and then open it and it will roll in the eye)2) Like you said warm compresses help a lot and the more often you can do it will greatly help 3) Take baby shampoo and scrub your lashes with a q-tip.4) Lastly doing a lash massage in small circular motions help also, I recommend using a soft cloth and placing it over your pointer finger and gently massaging and if you do it with a warm washcloth it will be more beneficial

  • I have no words to describe my gratitude to you. I’ve had this problem for over 10 years, my eyes cry so severely that I need to have a tissue at hand at all times to wipe out the tears, otherwise they just roll down my face and of course my make up is always ruined, no matter how many times I retouch it during the day. And this painful crust builds around the corner of my eyes from the constant tears… A nightmare. Eye drops never helped, no doctor either… Even reading is difficult, because I have to wipe out the tears constantly. I just tried this and it worked! I’m speechless! I can’t that you enough! I can’t believe it! Thank you, thank you with all my heart! ❤️

  • I can’t tell you how happy I am to have found this article!! For years I’ve randomly be struggled with my eyelids watering. Hadn’t happened in a while until yesterday. Ruined my eye makeup yet again. Happened by again today! I was actually even looking for a waterproof eye primer. I’m so thankful I know what the cause is & what to do about it. ❤️❤️

  • Thanks for the tips! I have struggled with this for awhile and it always seems to happen after a ‘big” eye look. Maybe it’s the powder getting in my eyes or blocking the tear ducts. Also, it seems to happen mostly in the morning and in cold weather. Your eye look is gorgeous in this article btw! Looks great with that lip color!

  • Nikkia, I just want to say that this hack is a life saver for me!! I watched your article yesterday and tried this technique today. My eyes watered a teeny tiny bit. Usually, my eyes are a watery and red mess once I finish my eye makeup. My eyes would water so bad I had tears building up in the crease of my eye messing up my eyeshadow, tears underneath my eye that would totally mess up my eye liner and concealer. I have to apply a moisturizing lip balm to the corners of my eyes at night because they would be red and chapped. I can’t tell you thank you enough!! I didn’t realize my eyes watered so much due to my dry eyes. I love your articles and have learned so many great tips from you! Thank you and love you!

  • Thank you so much for making this article!! I did what you described, and it worked!! I’m so much happier with wearing eyeshadow now. This is a game-changer for me. Thank you again for taking the time to make a article about this simple solution that otherwise is easy to overlook. It might not work for everyone, but it is definitely worth trying and finding out. Years ago, my optometrist described doing this when my eyes were suffering from dryness. It never occurred to me that this might also work for eyes that are too watery. The common factor is tear ducts that are not allowing the proper flow, whether into or out of the eye. Enjoy your day and again I appreciate you taking the time to share this info.

  • Thank you so much for making this article! This is a problem that plagues me everyday. I have dark under eye circles and use concealer set with powder and when my eyes water, mixed with the powder would absolutely ruin it and I’d waste so much time trying to “fix” the issue while my eyes would just keep watering. The heat trick has made the problem pretty much go away! Thank you!!!

  • I have been struggling with this for a few years….was told I may need surgery. I’m a huge huge fan of eye make-up and I love to wear it and apply different shades. I’m a big mascara freak as well. I tried this and purchased some drops and it worked great!! Thank you so much. Now I don’t sit in work with raccoon eyes anymore!! PERFECT TRICK!!!! Nikkia, you saved my make up drama!! LUV U!!!

  • Nikkia, you are wonderful! My eyes are so dry, I was recently prescribed Restasis. Some mornings my eyes are not watering but they are so dry it hurts to open them. I am literally walking into walls in the morning! But I found your trick works for this as well! Thank you so much for this great advice!

  • I can not bealieve ! It really works ! I have this problem for 2 years I think and no cream or treatment could stop it,today I tried it in the morning and I am so happy to see that today is the first day without wattering mark around my eyes and no make-up distroyed by my tears . Thank you sooooo much, love you !❤❤❤

  • I have been feeling so discouraged because I love make up so much but lately every time I do my make up not even getting to my eye make up yet just concealer and then one or both of my eyes is watering like crazy and it’s impossible to finish the look. I’m so glad I search for this and found your article I’m going to try this tonight! Thanks boo❤️

  • Thank you Nikkia for this info. You delivered it so effortlessly and helped me to see that it’s really simple. The other articles that I have watched for mibobian gland disorder have required you to go out and purchase special moisturizer masks from the ophthalmologist or to spend 45 minutes 2 or 3 times each day doing this. You helped me to see that a warm, wet cloth, 5 minutes is ALL that I will probably need. I love your website. Even though your skin type is oily and I am dry, I still watch all of your articles ❤😊

  • Thank you! This has helped me so much! Had been using castor oil on my eyes for lash growth but realized it was clogging my tear ducts. Just a few times of using this method has eliminated my watery eyes. Also if I apply too much eye cream at night, I have been able to do the massage and helps eliminate the watery blurry eyes!

  • I am super excited to try this hack because I have that problem literally every single time I wear eye makeup therefore it ends up ruining my lower lash line application. Thanks for coming up with this hack and for all of the other hack articles you’ve put out because they’re always different and unique, which I adore! Love you darling!
