  • In high school and college, I remember writing many papers for English classes. Often, after reading a novel, we would have to analyze the story, and what the author was trying to achieve. This is my take on it, and I have quite literally seen it dozens of times. First, of all, in real life, there is no way the necklace would have stayed in her pocket that long, after they landed in the water. Unless, it were tied somehow. And, in real life, she and the rest of the inner circle of the cast did not exist, and were a type of historical fiction characters. But, if Rose had brought recognition to the fact that she still had the diamond, she would have risked Cal (and her mother) knowing that she survived. She does state that Cal committed suicide almost 20 years later, after the stock market crashed. She would have been roughly 40 years old, and had probably carved out the best life she could after meeting Jack. Her mother would have been roughly sixty or seventy at that time. Why not bring it out after her mother might have passed and she herself was an older woman? Being how turned off she was to the idea of riches: not wanting to marry Cal, hated the societal restraints and norms, was not arrogant and proud, admired the personality traits of “poor” Jack, etc. she certainly would not sell it to bring upon herself more of what she hated. She wanted to remain the free spirit Jack had helped bring out in her. If she hated it that much, then why not anonymously give it to a charity or museum?

  • See, THIS is the real reason to hate Rose. Everyone always going on about how she “left him in the water” after the movie clearly showed him trying to get on too but it wouldn’t hold both of their weight, so he sacrificed for her. That wasn’t her fault. But holding on to a $20 million necklace instead of using it to help her family! Thank you for this skit finally setting that straight.

  • OK, I feel like everyone needs to calm down a bit. OK, it wasn’t even that funny of a bit and they should have made it shorter. But Cheri Oteri was great in this (she’s not an actual granny as you may have found out) and I did feel that the old lady in Titanic was a bit annoying. And it is quite funny when you think about this, because Paxton plays some kind of treasure hunter and he still listens to her three-hour story only to learn that the Heart of the Ocean was lost forever, when you think about it, his reaction in the bit may have been more realistic than the one he had in the movie.

  • James Cameron, the last man on earth with a sense of humor, I salute you :). To all the people not amused by this, ITS COMEDY!!! Any adult knows you don’t beat up elderly people (or any one if we are really being honest) but the absurdity of of an elderly person being treated like that is hilarious.

  • It’s crazy I never seen this skit until tonight in 2022 back in the day when I was young I was big on mad TV and couldn’t catch on to snl who was at they best looking years later hundreds of clips I missed and having a newfound love the biggest thing I love perusal this in 2022 is knowing I had that same shirt Horatio Sanz is wearing that was my joint

  • I enjoy most of the SNL shows and sometimes laugh my lungs out (mostly because of the brilliant Kristen Wiig) but from 2:10 this just isn’t comedy. Brutality and abuse aren’t funny. Some people may say: come on, don’t be so bumptious. I am not, but if something is not right it simply is not right, end of story.

  • Would been funnier if BILL PAXTON had rugby tackled her just before she throws the diamond over the side. “AH HAH YOU OLD BAT I KNEW IT”! He grabs the diamond. “I would have lost ten million bucks on this trip but this should pay for it”. She kicks him in the nuts, grabs the diamond back and throws it over the side. Paxton dives in after it and drowns. He then meets Leonardo Decaprio and the rest of the the Titanic victims and they are all laughing at him. THE END

  • The granddaughter being mad only makes sense if she knew Rose had the diamond this whole time while the sketch frames her as making the whole thing up and never having the diamond in the first place. Even if she did at one point the assumption was that she left it aboard the Titanic and even if she knew where on the ship it was she would have no way to reclaim it.

  • it’s even funnier for me for many kids of my country titanic was the first Hollywood movie we saw everyone believed jack and rose were real people and the old lady was actually in Titanic the time I found out that’s not true, I couldn’t convince my friends that it’s a fictional story built around the titanic

  • This is so wrong and so freaking funny all at the same time!! Can you say “elder abuse”? It reminds me of the SNL alternate ending to “It’s a Wonderful Life”. If you haven’t ever seen it look it up, it is so hilarious and should have been the real ending to the movie!! As for Rose keeping the necklace; she would have had to forfeit it if it had ever been exposed that she was in possession of it since an insurance claim was paid out in 1912. The insurance company that paid the claim would technically own it even if the company had been through numerous owners or name changes throughout the decades. If the company didn’t exist at all in any form in 1997 which would seem highly doubtful, then the courts would have still intervened since it technically wasn’t hers.

  • Wow, people are losing their shit over this in the comments, I thought it was brilliant, people are talking about beating Rose over the necklace when that was the only unknown part of the storyline, everyone knew what was going to happen from the title. I was born and raised in Belfast so I know a thing or two about this subject. People say that it is too soon, my 87 year old grandmother had family on board and she loves that since it is interesting family heritage and part of history. In Belfast they even built a “quarter” with housing and a titanic museum that looks similar to an iceberg and it is a huge tourist attraction. Calm down people, the sketch is funny.

  • They built the ship Titanic to sail the ocean blue and they thought they had a ship that the water wouldn’t go through. But the good lord raised his hand, said, “This ship will never land.” It was sad when the great ship went down. It was sad, so sad. It was sad when the great ship went down. Husbands and wives, little children lost their lives. It was sad when the great ship went down to the bottom of the sea.
