How Does A Narcissist End A Marriage?

At the end of a relationship, a narcissist may resort to manipulation tactics, blaming the victim for the failure of the relationship and attempting to keep them. When things don’t work out, the narcissist puts the blame entirely on the victim. Leaving an abusive relationship is often the most dangerous time for a victim, as the abuser fears losing control.

Narcissistic individuals are known for their grandiose sense of self-importance, lack of empathy, and persistent need for admiration. Marriage to a narcissist worsens over time, with more wives exhibiting narcissistic qualities. The primary reason a narcissist marries is for convenience, as they have ready access to narcisissitic supply.

The effect of narcissist abuse on health is negative, with malignant narcissists lying at the end of the scale because they don’t need validation. To heal, one must envision who they want to be in a romantic relationship, include healthy boundaries, discernment, and self-discovery.

Frequent lying is another common tactic used by narcissists during divorce. They may exaggerate or fabricate stories about their partner’s behavior to make themselves appear as the wronged party, particularly during courtroom proceedings. Financial manipulation is another issue, as narcissists may use money as a tool for control during the divorce process.

After marriage, narcissists can disregard their spouse completely, continue using them for benefits, and go out and do whatever they want. It is crucial to keep plans secret, educate yourself on narcissism, rebuild your support system, and seek help when needed.

  • I just left my narcissistic relationship of 8 years. This relationship consisted of him cheating, lying, emotional/physical abuse – there was point during our relationship where he would refer to me as a dog and say he needed to train me to be more obedient. Not even 10 minutes after we broke up he had another date set up. I’m one day free and although I’m heartbroken and sad I’m finally realizing that this next girl is only gonna go through exactly what I went through. Good luck to her I guess.

  • My couples therapist actually started siding with my narcissistic partner, and they made me feel crazy. The more I cried, the more I looked unstable. I remember that day vividly, and sadly, I think about it occasionally, which makes me realize how manipulative this person is. We share a child, and he is about to become a lawyer. I fear ending up like Betty from “Dirty John”. Wish me luck, guys. I’m planning my way out.

  • The reality is: anxiety, depression, smoking, isolation, eating disorders, panick attacks, distrust from your family and friends, lack of goals, low self steem, not recognizing yourself, feelings of betrayal, lies, stress, insomnia, skin problems, hearing all the time from outsiders” love yourself”, anger, sadness, bags under the eyes, high blood pressure..and tbe worst ” failing to the own self . Many of us hide it in order to look ” normal” to others while the pain is inside eating the immune system..if you are ready to run: Run for your sanity asp, dont look back, its not about loving yourself cliche. Its about saving your sanity, your mental health. Run far away .

  • Thank you for your articles. With an Overt Narcissist first he may make promises to change then when that does not work, aggression, and physical violence. He will try to get you back under his control by any means necessary. You are his property no matter how many times he has cheated and left you. I had to leave the state making it more difficult for him to have access to me. This narc traveled to where I was living 5 states away and tried to drag me back cave man style. I have read that the lesser narcissist has poor cognitive function and low impulse control. Some are even capable of rape when they suffer a narcissistic injury. While I believe all narcissist can lash out violently when enraged and suffering from a narcissistic injury it is even more so with the lesser. My experience with this narcissist was even if we separated and he had moved on with a new supply source he would still come around to make sure I was not seeing anyone. If I happened to start dating he became violent even when he was engaged with someone new. Most narcissist when they are love bombing a new supply source will not want the one they discarded in the picture at least in the beginning of his new relationship. If they are engaged with a new supply source and still Hoovering you for fuel they have a sadistic streak. This narcissist cheated throughout the entire marriage. He engaged in triangulation with his first wife. She was a constant in our marriage until her suicide. The Covert Narcissist may try to come back after they have been involved in a few relationships which did not work out.

  • “A narcissist will not leave someone unless they have some waiting in the wings”. Bingo. After 10 years of being abused emotionally and ignored and gaslighted I finally stopped giving my narcissist his attention. Within nine months he found someone else and left me. It’s been 10 Years… I’ll take that parade now!

  • I was hoovered back 4 years ago. I broke free today. Thank you for helping me see the relationship and the abuse for what it really is. I won’t be falling for it again. I can’t believe how much I have been guilted just today. I honestly thought I was worthless. I was ready to take my own life. Today me and my daughter are safe in hiding.

  • I wasn’t even in a relationship with my narcissist. When I tried dating him he said my emotional reactions were the problem (not his lack of empathy, which was what made me emotional) and if I could change that everything would be fine. He would keep me in the friends with benefits stage so he could push and pull me when he pleased. It was really jarring to finally realize what was happening to me. I thought I was going crazy. I set my boundaries and walked away.

  • I kick myself for not listening to my ex when he dropped hints about his mental issues, narcissism or psychopathic/sociopathic. I remember he told me at the beginning that his ex said he was “Unemotional and detached”. I also knew she’d left her belongings when she left. I should have trusted my gut. Always trust your gut.

  • The breakup with my narc ex boyfriend was one of the most painful experiences I’ve ever gone through. It hurts with mega agony inside and it feels like your stuck in loop of emotional pain triggers. Every day can be torcher especially when they hoover to get us bk with their love bomb overload. Having the ups and downs but when the emotions hit they hit hard. Always thinking he would change. It’s like u can’t detach. Times a great healer and through determination and day by u start to ease and get to a point u can get through the pain that eases gradually. I’m still healing but I know I got rid of him for a very good reason. Once u see the mask slip u see through them. It’s the memories of how they pretended that we yearn for again. Which is why we must remember their true within that is dark and miserable. They never let go but wonder off for a short time when they have other entertainment for their attention seeking needs. Hold on to that belief of who they really are ready for their next come bk.

  • Interesting take. Her comment regarding the difficulty of extricating from a narcissist is so true. Why is it so difficult? My belief is that, if you are the opposite, ie, an empath, then you view it as insensitive and un-empathetic to dump the narcissist. And, tragically and hopelessly, you hang onto hope that you can “reform” the narcissist, which is laughable. I am living this nightmare now. I have a very smart female friend, a confidant, with whom I would like to have a romantic relationship, and she has patiently counseled me. However, she has reached the stage where she says, she is no longer the problem, you are, for staying in a toxic relationship. Do you want to consciously be unhappy for the rest of your life when it is within your control to fix it?

  • I just left an emotionally abusive narc bf about two months ago and oh my god, he’s made leaving just as bad as being with him. I’m just happy to finally be out of such a toxic relationship. I thought about leaving him two years ago, but it’s actually really hard and I didn’t realize how hard it is until you’re going through with it. If you’re in the process of leaving or have already left a narcissist, I’m proud of you and you’re strong! You got this! 💜

  • I can’t be more astonished. This is exactly what just happened to me in my last “relationship”. Thank you so much for sharing all the info related to narcissism. Not only gave me more awareness about other people and how to deal with them but also to identify my own narcissistic tendencies that come out from time to time, and stop them or avoid them if possible. Thank you!

  • Just threw my abusive narcissist boyfriend out of my life for good. I was used for too long. I didn’t even recognize myself in the mirror, everything revolved around him. I’m not fully healed, everyday is easier. It’s been just a little under a month.ive been isolated from friends, certain family. I hear he is telling people I was the bad one, ha, he used me financially, a place to live, sexually and a punching bag. That’s alright, I still have my apartment and job, he has neither, just a list of legal issues now. I am moving on, while he is latching on to something and someone else. I love Dr.Ramani articles. It helps me get ready for my day. Thank you!

  • Once you have escaped your toxic relationship, don’t let the damage carry on. Reflect on it. Think about everything you learned about yourself and other people while you were doing your best to make things work with this untenable person. Don’t live your life out hating them, fact is, they could not help being what they are. YOu are a survivor, and you have a new life to live far wiser than most.

  • I don’t remember the exact moment, where the thought of my ex with someone else brought me a sigh of relief, but it was around that moment that I felt the chains break off of me. Months later, after kicking him out and making a parenting plan that he ignored, he took me to court. I was immobilized with fear. He really just needed to feel in control of our child, or at least not be controlled by my decisions. The mediator has recommended sole custody for me🎉 Now, I have to get my life in order. I will tell the people who are important to me that if anything happens to me, it was him. I have started healing, and it’s taken a long time to even get here, but I am doing okay. I am starting to recognize the patterns before I get sucked in. I prepare for every possible outcome, and make plenty of arrangements. I will not be bullied, and if it doesn’t come out in court, it’ll come out some other way. It’s my story, my experiences, to tell. Learn their ways. Learning WHY will help you with the how. Knowledge is power. Don’t you give up, because it takes a bit of practice and self love, and there’s a learning curve. There’s a reason you’ve found your way here, and you can’t pretend you don’t see what’s going on.

  • She nailed it ! All my good peoples don’t hold any resentment or guilt towards the narcissist it will eat you alive. It’s been 1 month since I left my narcissist ex gf and I’m finally getting over the hump. Just accept your feelings and unpack it. The common denominator is they aren’t meant for you and you will find someone better trust me

  • I dated a narcissist for 3 months. He had a disturbing calmness and seemed to gloat when I was in pain about the relationship ending. It was very disturbing and I was in denial. The most emotion I saw on his face was when I said to him let’s end the relationship. There was shock on his face for about a second before he went back to calm. God, thank you for protecting me! 🙏🏾

  • OMG this therapist thing happened to me!! I thought I was the only one!! My ex convinced her it was me. She agreed and told me all the things I was doing wrong in front of him. He became empowered and the abuse became something that was literally going to kill me. It was the last straw and we were divorced within months. She later realized she was way off and admitted it and let my ex have it for lying to her. But she never apologized to me. That def added to my trauma. Maybe I should send her a letter for my own healing. It’s been 10 years.

  • It was messy, it was emotional, I was almost hoovered back but when I found out about narcissism I made a quick decision to just disappear and never contact them again. It is so disturbing how their mind works, after giving them tons of empathy, understanding and emotional support I was the one who apparently planned the break up just to hurt them even more because they were ‘going through a difficult period’ in their life. According to them, all along it was my evil plan… The moment I blocked all the available ways of contact I felt so free and happy again, the best decision ever! Narcissists have no conscience, they look out just for themselves. I don’y want to deal with people like that ever again in my life. The positive thing from all this mess was learning the red flags and how to spot these people. Please, if someone makes you feel confused, you keep apologising for stuff you didn’t do and are afraid to say something because they’ll get angry, get away from them as soon as possible! And trust your intuition! I ignored it, even though it kept telling me something is wrong right from the beginning.

  • After too many times down that rabbit hole, I was finally able to get out (8 years in it). It’s been 7 years of not living together and 3 years since the divorce…he still came back around trying to convince the kids that I am not caring for them properly and trying to sabotage friendships I have worked so hard to build. I still get threats and crazy text messages, but I just ignore them…even though they can be downright scary. It’s been a very difficult road but I am proof that YOU CAN GET OUT! Those living in these situations, understanding that this is not okay and that you would be better without the stress!

  • When you leave a narc, it feels like freedom from a cage or prison. Like you walked out of a storm into the sunshine or a dungeon into a bright beautiful day. Like you can breathe easier, relax, and see everything differently. A feeling of revelation. But that feeling can be short lived, unless you are prepared for what the narc you left may do next. The narcissist attack is sneaky, psychological and powerful. The only chance you have of defeating it is knowing about it and being prepared. The narc will likely be real calm, nice and even sweet. Apologetic, thoughtful, and things like that. But be prepared and don’t fall for it because it’s a trick to throw you off guard. Just remember, that this nice bit shouldn’t come after a breakup. The individual had the chance to be nice in the relationship and never was. So it’s always a trick, with no exception.

  • Omg this is spot on. Thank you … I now know I’m totally sane and was being constantly abused. My ex sent 9 texts after calling me horrific names begging me back. Saying we had a ‘special bond’ yeah so special I saw him every fortnight landed up with depression and still recovering from his gaslighting.

  • It breaks my heart and I’m literally crying right now because I have been through the worst relationship with the most terrible kind of narcissistic person. I feel so sorry for that old me. I’m very happy in life now but the thought of someone killing you, crushing your soul completely to a point where you feel as if you’re a piece of garbage, who was thrown out on the street and this person picked you up and helped you. Seriously its the most disgusting feeling.

  • It’s not harder to leave a narcissist. Its literally a “nightmare.” Every thing shared in this article is all true and more. The narcissist sees you as their property and will seek to scorch you. Its painful to escape a narcissist. The narcissist in my life got into a serious relationship in a short period time after scorching my life and leaving me without support of any kind. It was wicked.🤕

  • That was a great interview. Thank you 🙏🏾 everything explained and confirmed how I felt and ended up leaving with no contact for the last 9 yrs to the father of my child. I always felt bad that he discarded us, but never forced my child or him to communicate. My daughter new from a tender age that he was rotten person and she was the one who initiated no communication, she said Mummy I don’t want to know Daddy anymore, he isn’t nice. He has never called or visited since us since he left us in England and married someone in Canada 🍁, he then left her then went to America and married another woman and she kicked him out, now he is in America living in a little room, washing dishes in the hospital and also has medical problems. No contact all these years has been the been thing to happen. But the saddest thing is a child who is now 17 hasn’t had a father to support her emotionally, spiritually or financially, he also would make his children with different mothers argue with each other so the siblings moments of being close or distant.

  • These symptoms were seen by me over a 33 year period, that ended this year. I am very well, no personal issues. Dr. Ramani Durvasula is very spot-on on this subject. Excellent. All the symptoms of a classic narcissistic personality, I have found in the person I was with, and in the person’s mother and siblings. I am writing my experiences on this subject, to share with others who also are affected by this personality.

  • i’ve been in a relationship with a narcissist for five years now, constant cheating and lying and gaslighting me. everytime we broke up he had a new girlfriend within a week. these articles have made me realize that he’s not going to change for me, i’m now going to slowly work on getting out of the relationship. thank you for posting these.

  • In my experience, it’s like picking up a stray dog on the highway because you’re a good person, and then you get a few miles down the road and you notice that the dog’s eating all your groceries and shitting all over the floor, and when you try to correct the dog, it develops a shitty attitude because it says you don’t appreciate what a good job it’s doing driving the car.

  • Dr Ramani is GOLD!!! Listen to and follow EVERYTHING that she says. I was trapped in an abusive relationship with a sadistic covert narcissist, it was truly horrific. I followed her advice… I was able to escape, survive and now thrive!! Happiest I have ever been because I truly appreciate my freedom and have learned to love myself. The destination is totally worth the journey… don’t give up!! You are worth it!!

  • About the love bombing. Their words seem/feel empty, don’t fall for that. 😉 If you’re an empath you should feel the real reason someone tells you ”I love you”. When a normal person tells you I LOVE YOU, will show it thru actions and then will use words, you’ll feel goosebumps…or something life changing in your heart.

  • The main fact that is hard to wrap one’s mind around is the fact that they actually hate and are terribly envious of their lovers/victims. I remember playing the piano and singing, and I was so happy, doing what I Iove to do, and i looked over at the narc, and I felt this negative/evil energy. At first, I tried to downplay it, thinking he was bored or something. But, it didn’t take long for me to realize that there was no excuse for his evil/dark energy especially when I’m being genuinely happy. Knowing what I know now, he was obviously feeling incredibly hateful and jealous because of my sincere and genuine happiness and talent as a musician. He’s jealous. Honestly, I didn’t realize opposite sexes could be jealous of one another, as I have never been jealous of a man before, only women. It’s hard to digest the fact that people would seriously be that insecure, but, it’s reality, unfortunately when it comes to sick-minded individuals who nothing close to normal.

  • One month after we broke up (he did it), I saw him with his new supply. That hurt. It triggered all my abandonment issues, all my insecurities of unworthiness… yet she looks like me too. The only thing I could do to not cry was the laugh to myself, and remind myself that THAT is his pattern. Even though I was trying to check out of the relationship, it was hard to leave, and though I’m better for it now, I still can’t help but feel abandoned and even a little jealous (though I know what he is doing to that person is the same BS he did to me at the very beginning). And yet, he STILL texts me; I find that part comical, and it almost gives me a sense of weird relief in knowing that he is a creature/monster of his own sick patterns (ironically, for someone who prided himself on being “so different” and believed everybody else in the world were kooks except for him)… in a way, when he texts me, it weirdly comforts me because it confirms that he is a hoovering, attention-seeking, lying, manipulative narcissist– is that a strange response?

  • Before my past relationship, I was extremely confident, no insecurities of any sort. And now I’m insecure af, anxious, feeling inadequate and what not. But I’ll get back and come out better. She had so many options open while being with me and I was dedicated and only had her in my life. So now I’m gonna be alone and she’ll go to her next target. By the way, an early flag of NPD is how they potrey their past relationship. They’ll make a version of their ex and you’ll feel like it wasn’t their fault at all and the ex was the asshole for treating this person so bad and then BOOM. THEY’LL MAKE YOU THE SAME VERSION OF THEIR EX. And guess what? You’ll be the devil in her next stories. NPD people will never accept even a bit of their mistake so they don’t get any guilt and hence don’t need to improve or change themselves. The best thing is to leave, without trying to solve anything. Just leave. Let them think you were wrong because there’s no way you can convince them of their wrongdoings. So, leave and enjoy the peace. Being alone in peace is wayyyy better than living with someone in constant chaos.

  • I just went through this. And he got me with the second love bombing. Bled me dry of all my money first and stole so much from me. Worst of all, the time he stole from me and my kids. Thank God we didn’t have kids together. He also antisocial disorder and what you’d classify as a psychopath. Don’t think it’ll be long before he’s in prison again. Measure eleven. Praying for his next victim.

  • There is no doubt to the validity of this content. This situation is so real & so prevelant in our society that people who have never met me can explain & detail my relationship experience, my thoughts & even my words throughout. This teacher is wonderful, but almost everyone on youtube discusses these truths as if they should be taught in public school. Amazing & refreshing

  • I was with a narcissist boyfriend for almost 8 years. When things started it was great but after few months he became possessive and starts picking my friends, like whom i should hang out with and stuff. I felt like a bird keep in a cage. I wanted to break free but it was hard as i have grown to love him. I was depressed and he left me anyhow. And now After 5 years of breaking up ang through this talk show and thanks to Dr Ramani, i began to grow again mentally and hopefully all the years with the depression took away from me will return again eventually.

  • Absolutely so true. Through all this pain at lease I know the truth. This is so what’s happened to me. Found a replacement and of course tried to hide it to have both. The ability to lie so well is what finally got me. How many times did I fall for those lies. Thank you for the knowledge, as broken as I am at least I know the truth of the situation

  • One major tid it about narcissistic people is that a narcissist will always tell you “you shouldnt feel that way” narcissistic like to convince you that your emotions are misplaced and tell you how you should really feel. God it was so infuriating but I trusted said person and now I know it was all BS to keep me contained. NEVER AGAIN-!!

  • I will tell you that perusal the ex narcissist move on is extremely hard. 2 weeks and my ex moved on after a 3 year relationship. She’s not blowing him up on social media however she is being everything I wanted her to be too the other guy. Extremely hard to deal with but I’m sure it will end sooner or later but it is very hard to watch her treat him so good. After putting 2 and 2 together she had him in the back pocket before she left. Typical behavior.

  • I left my Narcisist husband almost 3 years ago. Took a lot of strength, I was there living with my Narcissistic partner away from my family and friends in a different province. I was afraid he might pull something or try to hurt me. Ps, he had brainwashed my parents so good, they believed him over their own daughter. Now, my parents are understanding what had happened. He was mentally, physically and emotionally abusive. Took everything he could take from me. It wasn’t easy just understanding how he psychologically and emotionally tortured me and ruined me. I still get nightmares about him controlling me. Please, if u think you are in a relationship with a Narcissist, RUN. They will ruin you in ways you cannot imagine and they will NEVER change. There is NO HOPE in that relationship also not your job to fix him/her. Focus on getting better and healing. ❤

  • After hearing this, I can’t tell if this is supposed to make me feel better or not. But at least I am now aware that narcissists will always find a way to get their way. I am in the middle of leaving a narcissistic guy and boyyy it was NOT EASY! Kept getting flashbacks of him after not communicating with him anymore. The amount of manipulation and love-bombing I endured already racked my brain into having a poor sense of judgement on whether to block him or not. All I did now was just ghosting him like exactly what he did to me before

  • I left my Narc a month ago and have been No Contact since. She went back to her ex a few days later and got engaged. I know this because he sent me a friend request on Instagram so I could see their engagement and pictures and so I had to block him to. She downgraded back to a jobless drunk she’s gonna have to take care of. I definitely don’t want to date anyone that wants to be with someone like him. And all she did was talk shit on him the whole time we were together. Go figure

  • I see this is over a year old but I am compelled to respond. I was married to a Narc for 22 years and thankfully got out. My ex stalked me and continued to leave messages on my work phone, showed up at my apartment when I was not there but making sure I knew he was there. I had cancer 12 years before I left him and he said often BUT I stood by you when you had cancer and this is the thanks I get! We were divorced for over 10 years when he passed and he was still doing that stuff.

  • When I was with a narcissist, it was SO different from a normal break up that I KNEW something was wrong and different. I’d had breakups before, we tended to end pretty amicably, though I did have some weird breakups before. This one was different. I felt like I had poured so much of myself into trying to help my ex, trying to be how he wanted me to be, trying to change to fit this “ideal” he had of me. And I knew he had it because he’d be in his daydream and tell me about it and I was concerned about it because I knew I wasn’t going to live up to that because I’m human. Eventually, I’d been so busy trying to do so much to make this relationship work, while giving up who I was and ignoring and belittling my own wants that I ended up feeling suicidal. Which I didn’t want to tell my ex, but he kept asking me, and I eventually told him I felt suicidal because of him (I wasn’t good at expressing what I meant; I meant how he was treating me and how the relationship was going, but my mind just wasn’t very clear at the time) and he took it as a insult. When I tried my last ditch effort to get him to change and told him if he was willing to go to therapy, too, as I was planning to go myself, he told me I was using my suicidal thoughts to manipulate him. Maybe I was, so idk. Anyway, it took us 4 months to break up because, despite me still feeling some type of way about how he had treated me and the non-apology, he still wanted us to be friends. I declined and that’s when he started to treat me more rudely.

  • Thank you very much. You have really helped me understand what I am going through with my girlfriend. She has strunged me alone and went to man to man and blamed me . Cheats while I’m at work in my home. Leaves a week at a time with no explanation comes back and ask for money. Be nice and loving for a couple of days and the same thing all over again and blames me. Ask me for help til I am broke Leaves again comes back on payday 3 years of this I finally understand I’m loving her trying to help and discarded til I’m needed.

  • It’s been 9 months since my narc ex monkey branched to another guy. That relationship only lasted about 4 months. The first 4 months were absolute pain. I truly cared for this person. I just believed she acted this way after having our daughter, and stress of life. Man, was I wrong. The last 5 months have been awesome. Once I realized what had happened I was able to deal with it and move on. Narcs are nasty emotionless people. I’m lucky I only lost 3 years with this person, but It was a good learning experience. Whoever is reading this, believe me, it gets better. Then you start crushing every day then wonder why the heck you would have ever put up with the devaluation phase. Now you know how to deal with these types. Good learning experience

  • The day I left my ex, my best friend was going to pick me up at a specific time and get me out. The second she rang the doorbell at 8AM he pushed me into the bathroom and locked me inside with him and held me there for an hour. My best friend heard me scream outside and called the police, who did nothing. At some point he told me to go open the door and send my friend away. I opened the door, told my best friend to never leave me alone with him for a second and get me the fuck out. The police man went inside, told my ex not to do that again and left. We grabbed what we could, left some shit there and ran for the hills. Getting over him was weird. I was not in love anymore, but I was crying a lot feeling like I was somehow on withdrawl. Best decision ever to leave that psycho. I only hope he won’t hurt anyone else, but I’m sure he did and will again.

  • This is so true! It’s like perusal her speak about the exact thing that I’m going through right now and have went through for the past six years. Each day is still a struggle. Actually sometimes it’s minute by minute. When you’re dealing with a narcissist, it just messes with your head a whole lot more. Especially when you really loved this person or you thought that you loved this person. And they can just be so incredibly cold.

  • Thankyou Dr. Ramani! For a long time I thought it’s me, I am the problem. You helped make clear and put a name to what I lived for 15 years. I left him… he is losing his mind. One minute it’s please, the next minute, well just go ahead then and “f” off. He turned my kids against me. I know this temporary. For today I choose me. And it’s because of you and a few other you tube docs that I found courage, answers and the woman I used to be until someone broke me down and told me how to think, feel, even controlled my money. Anyway, I wanted to say thanks. And to those suffering…. Keep perusal this lady, trusting your own mind and putting the plan in motion.

  • I’m an empath and I was in a narcissistic relationship for two years I just now tonight broke up. I’m so devastated everything you said is so true. Bebo Caesar everywhere I’m just sobbing and because I stop talking to people it’s hard to reach out now oh my God I’m just thank you so much for having this article I’ve been listening to you for a couple of months and it’s been remarkable I’m trying so hard I was angry and confused I was loved and then hated I was ignored I’m so devastated right now thank you so much for this article it’s really helping me focus thank you so much and love all these articles love you.

  • I broke up with my narcissistic ex boyfriend of 8 months just last Sept. 11, and honestly there’s so much anger and bitterness in my heart. And people in my office would just tell me to get over it or let go of the bitterness as if it’s easy. I only realized he is a narcissist days later when I saw a article about narcissism here on YouTube, and everything was really about him. But what made me more and more hurt and angry and bitter was that he was actually cheating on me for maybe 2 or 3 months already. And the people in his office all knew he had a girlfriend–everyone knew and tolerated the wrong. I’m still having a hard time accepting that it wasn’t just him who betrayed me, it was like a whole workplace teamed up to hurt me. And everything is so overwhelming, but I have to stay strong and show them I am above them. To all victims of cheaters and narcissistic people, we can make this. We are better off without them. Time heals all wounds.

  • I met several people who fill in the categorys. I’m not saying they’re per se narcissists but they definately have egoistic, manipulative traits, sometime without even knowing them (conciously). And everytime its so beautiful to see their jaw dropping to the floor when you finally realise your worth and defend yourself 💖 If they become unfriendly, even hypocritical afterwards better cut all contact and let yourself heal.

  • Dr. Ramani is spot on at the very end of this article starting at 6:50 about preparing to leave a narcissist. My exhusband did all the things she mentions, to include trying to get sole custody of my two children. Over a decade later, I’m STILL dealing with the fallout of leaving the narc. Almost ruined me financially on multiple occasions due to dragging me through the courts that don’t understand this is a form of control and abuse through manipulation. My children are no longer pawns he can legally use to hurt me, but he continues to manipulate one of my children against me. The other child took fours years of psychology in university and lots of counseling to understand their father.

  • I totally relate to this. Going through a divorce with a narc from a 17 year marriage right now. Fortunately my attorney got an agreement signed by both parties and the judge. Narc dragging things out as long as she can and filing every nonsense court filing she can. It’s not easy but fortunately it will likely be over soon. Important thing is me knowing she’s a narc and how to handle it and how not to handle it.

  • This is so true and resonates with. I know my partner was in a relatiinship before we met (past – i shouldnt be bothered) and i fear that if i leave her she might get into another relationship which i cant even imagine. Staying in this relationship doesnt feel like a romantic relarionship at all as she never shows that love, compassion, kindness, eagerness to see and talk to me, not ready for healthy and tough converstions, want me to put in all efforts while she keeps ignoring my needs, etc. Its so difficult and scary to deal with this every single day.

  • dr. ramani is like an angel on earth, giving all this insight completely free of charge. she could not possibly know how many people she is helping and how many lives she changes every day. before i found her i didnt trust any of these kinds of “doctors” on youtube. for some reason i trust this woman. she is helping me heal little by little every day, every month. thank you dr. ramani.

  • Boy oh boy was this my marriage. I was reading a short story by Stephen King one night, A Good Marriage. It was one of his great short stories, and from the moment I started reading it, I had goose bumps and this certainty that just suffused my whole being that i was reading a story perilously close to my marriage. Sociopath. Narcissist. I can’t go back through describing it all again. I had to totally close that door and cut him off. Hoovering. Gaslighting. I blamed myself for so long. I was stupid, I was always wrong. He went right into a new marriage with step kids, and I got a text when he was having a baby with the new wife. Best wishes. Bye. Yeah. God this is …just can’t go back there. Thanks for this. I’m not crazy.

  • I left a narcissist and he does exactly what she said. He tried to convince people around him that’s he’s the victim because I left. He also tells people he did all he could which is not true. I was a provider and the moment he cut my mobility and transportation off from me I couldn’t provide he had to step up and I saw his lack of ability to provide and love me as a man should. Everything set in, the lack of security stability and his lack of empathy for me. I pray for whoever deals with him after me. He never loved me he just tried to mask himself from his abuse in the relationship before me. That’s hard to accept because that’s nowhere where I was with him but I tell you what a lot of people don’t make it out alive and I did. I can find love within me I don’t have to look outwards and I sure as hell don’t have to put up with him anymore. I feel free. I don’t feel like im in flight or fight mode anymore. I don’t have to hide or be afraid because God got me out of there. It’s been 4 days and it’s hard but I know I’ll be okay and I’ll have more than what he put me through.

  • I threw my narc out early January he’s been hovering and now it’s June but I have nerves of steal and I will not bend and the doctor is so right about those people everything she said I went through and that’s what made me throw him out I was exasperated I was so tired of it I was completely done it took a while for me to come to this conclusion but it came along and I feel so much better now 🥰 thanks for the confirmation Doc I needed to hear that cuz I knew I was doing the right thing.

  • And you know what you talking about everything in your article you were just you were just reading the details of my life you know you were hitting my father’s Behavior right on the nail I tried taking counseling and narcissism is deep a lot of people can’t deal with it not even professionals it’s I guess the stories are too deep and overwhelming I guess I’m glad you understand it and you giving tools that are saving lives I tried to seek help everybody just looked at me like I was blank I knew I wasn’t crazy thank you for giving me knowledge I’m going to keep telling you cuz it’s true you saved my life I move to another state so my father cannot harm me anymore I’m even thinking about changing my name my mother died from his narcissism that’s when the light went off in my head my life was dysfunctional I’m so glad for your articles it’s hard when someone like that is your father you’re not supposed to talk out against your parent not that I was I just knew life wasn’t right you are an angel in my life thank you so much

  • I just had to walk away from a friend who’s dating a narcissist. He said they broke it off and off I could be there for him. I agreed spent the last few days being there helping trying to keep him busy to move on. Ultimately I was just being used so he could make the narcissist jealous, returns crying, begging and stalking my friend and that’s all it took. Then now the narcissist is threatening him to out him at work, oh my friend got him a job with him. That workplace is all blue collar men cracking jokes. He knows if he’s outed they can’t fire him but will make life hell for him until he quits. I tried being there for him, perusal articles to understand him better. So I need to save myself. It truly breaks my heart.

  • Breaking up/ divorcing/escaping narcissist spouse? First, you must find a way to be financially independent aka. hide some cash somewhere. Not only you can use the money after you leave them but most importantly it gives you the confidence for you to make decisions for your life/safety while you’re still trapped. Having the money will open up the horizon of choices. And for the children, it is not going to get any worse for them if you divorce…for you and the kids, living with a narc is the bottom already.

  • When my dad died when I was 23, the narcissistic abuser told me to “shut up, stop crying, everyone knows it’s so much harder for a GUY to lose their father than it is for a girl.” (His dad is healthy and well and has never come close to dying.) He also insulted my father’s introversion. I wont describe what I wanted to do him at that moment. The rage, heartbreak, and disbelief I felt at those statements finally broke “the spell.” I hate that the death of my father is what it took for me to find the strength, the courage, the righteous anger at what he put me through to finally start plotting my escape. But it wasn’t his death, really. It was love. Real love, for my one and only Dad, not for the falseness of manipulative love bombing and BS I’d been subjected to. I love you, Dad. Thank you for everything.

  • It took me over a year to completely get my ex out my life. She sabotaged my life, ruined friendships and my reputation.. it goes so much deeper, I’m emotional damaged from it all. At 31 years old I’ve become a hermit & have anxiety being around people. I need help forreal.. I used to be the life of the party, fun loving and positive.. now I’m scared of love. I’m scarred.. physically and mentally… 😔 but I’m a fighter. I’ll keep trying to evolve..

  • Married my narcissist when I just turned 22, bout 32 now. Scared to run, they make me feel like I’m nothing, I’m just revered as “somebody” around my own house, now even by her children I’ve been raising since they where 1,3,5,7. 11 years I’ve spent most time I’ve ever been so alone and surrounded by people all at once, sadly these posts are all I got.

  • I had a ex husband who was narcissistic and honestly had no clue what it meant all the signs was there but I was young when I married him- when it got to bad for me to handle he did everything she mention in the article and even eventually somehow manipulated talking my child from me in the later years. Because I had no money, no support, no family I lost it all and still have to get counseling. It’s serious being with a narc and divorcing a narc. I would swear even now my child is brain washed. Like I need to write a book on how deep it can get but I believe she is doing a really good job so there’s no need. She is actually helping me. Thank you!

  • I’m 53 yrs old and It’s now 3 months since I’ve escaped. It was a 5yr relationshit and the hardest thing I’ve ever went through. He was a sadistic covert narcissist, it took me months to get my escape plan in place. He hid me up in the mountains and I’m literally running so he cant find me. I’m always super afraid to Express myself as most ppl just don’t understand. I appreciate you 🤗

  • My ex narcissist was able to convince a provincial court that I was insane or crazy I had to go to a hospital and prove that I was, and I couldn’t see my children for a year. Meanwhile, he was living with another woman in a matter of days after I left him. I’m now an advice columnist on Quora …for narcissism and other things.. If anybody’s in a relationship with the narcissist get away they can take away your whole life and he did he took my house my dog my children my reputation my doctor shall I go on oh and the teachers of my children and the community and he ruined my reputation for years! He also ruined my children. The courts gave him my children, and he and his family are all narcissists. You can imagine how my children turned out and they hate me well. Maybe they don’t hate me anyway. Thank you for this brilliant article💥

  • My mother! After my marriage, her phone conversations were so full of concern- I was surprised. Also, she wanted me to be present at my narc brother’s wedding to ensure that I fit in & support her & my brother’s description of the perfect loving family who doted on their daughter! I did not entertain them & my brother ‘s marriage ended in divorce within 1 to 2 years

  • Even though I am in the middle of a divorce, I am receiving gushing messages via WhatsApp from my husband, the type of messages that teenagers would send one another. He’s buying expensive gifts and telling me how he can’t imagine life without me, I’m his everything, how he feels home with me. This is the same hoovering monster who will rage, threaten and abuse like a fiend when he receives the next correspondence from my divorce lawyer. I’m past caring about flying monkeys – if they believe him over me, I don’t want them in my life. I just need the strength to get myself out of this living hell.

  • Thank u so much. Two days ago I broked up with my girlfriend, an ten months relationship. I realized that she has clearly problems when a lot times I said something hurt and she start doing a lot. When she never respected me and many other things. But, everytime I said I was tired of trying, she started doing great, making cute things and whatever. She humiliate me, make me feel guilty for everything, I just feel anxious and scared all the time. (I was completely surrendered and manipulated). And then, I asked help, and I get it the strength to break up with her. Was really painful, really hard, but thank God, now I can be happy and build a new life with someone else.

  • I believe my ex was narcissistic and when we were on the precipice of the break up, he suggested couple’s therapy which i turned down. The final days of the relationship were so traumatic for me and when we actually broke up, he got together with someone 1 week later. There were a lot of other events which happened during and post break up that were extremely unsettling so i can definitely say, everything she spoke of here was super relatable. It definitely was toxic and was a lot like war. 3 years later and i’m still single and have some healing left to do. Blessings, peace and strength to anyone currently going through this. It does get better but it takes time. Be good to yourself.

  • I had a female who replaced me without even telling me, then acted like it was my fault for getting upset over it. After 2 weeks of having ghosted her, she wormed her way back in and got me “back” with her for a bit. But it wasn’t long before she got bored and stopped acting like she cared, stopped replying to texts, was aloof and didn’t seem to care. I’m about to walk away for a second time and see how long it takes her to try to hoover me. Because I know what I’m dealing with, I’m just going to get what I want from her and then move on. Zero sympathy. That’s what she’s been doing to me multiple times over. Getting what she wants and throwing me away, pulling me back and doing it over again. The hunter is about to become the hunted.

  • This wonderful lady just explained my 25 year relationship with my now ex husband……. if I knew then what I know now…… but one thing for sure I might not have the money, possessions that he believes gives him status and happiness I have my freedom, my peace of mind and most of all my daughters. If I could say anything to anyone who reads this, trust your gut, don’t be blinded by love, when they show you who they are please believe them.

  • Dear lord, she is spot on. I feel blessed everyday. I married one. A yr. Later I was in a spot to adopt my grandchildren he decided he wanted out. I was understanding but he couldn’t just leave. Story so long I’ll just say this Dr is so spot on, every word. I thank God still everyday even 5 yrs later. Pray for ALL those still trapped.

  • I can’t believe how accurate this is. I’ve been in this relationship for 3 years, and if I’d seen this sooner I definitely would have gotten a divorce 2 years ago. He’s told me he can’t do relationships at least 6 times, and now that I’m ready to go and trying to finalize things, after the last time he said he wants to be on his own and be alone, he’s started the love bombing and hoovering stages. I realize this is a pattern, and thank God for this article because I really thought I was insane and just didn’t understand what a great guy he is, even though it’s been an emotional rollercoaster and he’s been a complete prick through a lot of this relationship. I’m so grateful for this article, because now I know how to approach exiting this relationship and moving on.

  • I’m still going through exactly this, one year I separated from him. I’m in Switzerland, and this abuse is not understood here from what I feel, hear and experience. It’s tough, most of all when you don’t understand German. I’m going through hell. But still standing. Dr Ramani, you’re freeing us educating us, making us stronger to leave them. Thank you for all this.

  • 3:44 not even an hour or so pass after perusal this article and learning about flying monkey, one of my acquaintances called me out of the blue, she knew about my b/u but didn’t have time to connect, which I can empathize, but proceeded to tell me she saw my ex at a NYE party… to which I promptly and politely asked her not to continue. I immediately recognized that she was one of the flying monkey that he released. I’m just glad that I came across this article while searching about therapist for narc abuse and watched it anyway. This helped armed me so i could endure the emotional and mental blow of that interaction with less damage. It still sucks and hurts, especially on the first day of new year.

  • Thank you so very much, I was crumbling to go back. I’ve been married for 37 years and from the day we got married I’ve felt wrong about how I feel, act, look, cook, clean shower, etc. And even when he does something he blamed me. Everytime I left he brought the kids into it. He still does, what a horrible mother I am, our kids are in their 30s., have great lives and children. Almost everything you are saying in this article he has done. this I am grateful, for running across this article. Thank you

  • Thank you from the bottom of my heart. I just found out my mom was a narcissistic and I was her target/source. I married a man who with our knowing or me knowing, helped me work through the root of the problem simply by mimicking my mother’s behavior of me. I am awakened and will leave this narcissist soon hopefully within a month. You have given the strength I need to break through and take my power back 💕

  • Things always hit home. The looks on Kyle’s face AR priceless. In my life I didn’t go through mediation I went through humiliation until the end when things evened out. He, the narcissist, Ended up marrying an older version of me because she’s a nurse and he was getting on now he has a hostage instead of a wife and they’re living in that rabbit-hole that he went down. Hard to believe this man has so much money. Who knew 🥺

  • While we did not live together full time. I left my Narcissist ex fiance after seven years of dating and two years of being engaged. I left because it was not until the second half of the seven years that I realized that not only was my ex fiance Dad a Narcissist but my now ex fiance was one as well. And you are exactly right when you say that they will promise you the world until they feel like they have got you where they want you. There is NO WINNING with them.

  • I remember that when I saw how dark things were getting, I explained to my ex how I wanted to walk away and try to recover from my past as well as the things I saw in the short period of time we were together. I blocked her, then I started receiving emails. When that received no response she had one of her friends call me. After that didn’t work, she showed up to my job in tears while holding the dog we rescued together. Then the cycle continued for another two years. This woman is 40 years old I am 26, she was in a 10 year relationship a decade ago and just wasn’t letting go and I have just now realized that it was not my job to pick up the pieces. I was not perfect in this relationship, I just know that I tried. Just posting this so people can see they are not alone.

  • i have leart so much from all of your feeds, thank you. i was with a woman (we both 50’s ) and the first 3 weeks were great then got strange. i have a full time shift job. she is unemployed. started to demand things (like i have to get a car,or that is the end) telling me how to dress. claiming she is drug dependent. asking me about my finances in the first 2 weeks. moody when i do not awnser her calls (as at work) blameing me when i cannot show up on time (as at work) no sexual, and not even a kiss when we meet. even went so far to kiss other men in front of me,that was the end point. and far many other thing you have mentioned. yes i hurt, but i thank you i was with you 100 per cent right to end it. and the final proof was how i ended it.

  • I feel all of this, I briefly went out with a narcissist, I saw a few warning signs. He tried to suck me back in. But I discarded them, then the smear campaign started. I’m glad it was so short lived. He tried alot of things, but again I ignored all of it. Let him rage, but I had narcissist in my home. So I moved on

  • I just hope more and more people will get educated on this type of relationships. I knew nothing of it and fell for it 2 times (and with the same person). A very hurtful experience that i’m still facing. It’s subtle, but ugly and raw. Would not recomend this at all. Now I’m seeing things a little differently, maybe because I’m older or maybe because I’m in therapy (or both). I want the red flags to be imprinted in my mind so that I don’t fall for it another time. It’s just too much.

  • I went through this. Bought the entire romantic vacation for us to go to Venice, Italy and then find out they admitted to having a younger side piece. “They’re everything you’re not.” while being discarded. Never have I felt so betrayed as in that very moment and they had already turned others against me in a smear campaign. I never once saw behind their mask.

  • I feel like she knows my ex-girlfriend personally. Whenever I watch articles like this I’m thinking “ok let me see which qualities DONT fit my partner” I really couldn’t find anything solid that made me say “yeah no thats not my partner” I’d throw out 100% spot on. Its insane how accurate this stuff can be
